How long to burn half a quart of oil
I have been taking my 2014 F150 to the dealer to get the oil changed at every 5000 miles. Shortly after my last oil change, the idiot light went on reminding me to get an oil change.
I called the dealer and they said not to worry about it, and they would flip it off, when I got my next oil change.
It is time for my next oil change, and I am a bit over my usual 5K change (at 7K miles). I told him the story about the idiot light and he said no worries, but I should check my oil myself, today.
So I did, and I am half a quart down, which seems excessive for a fairly new vehicle. (was during the time that I went from 29K miles to 36K miles)
Did the serviceman know something, like they didn't really change the oil, and this is why he was suggesting I check it?
Afterall, I am still five hundred miles below the suggested miles to change it, in the owners manual.
When I pointed that out to him, he insisted that I check it.
Now I am wondering if damage was done because they faked an oil change. How can I find out? It is my only transportation and I don't want to wait more than a day or two to get it changed, while I find out if they faked it or not.
Thanks

Half a quart of oil used in 7k miles sure doesn't sound excessive to me.

What motor?
10 exact motors could all possibly burn anywhere from no oil in 5000 miles to as much as a quart.

So you drove 7000 miles without checking the oil at all?
Most motors use some oil and a 1/2 quart in 7000 miles is pretty good IMO. I would start checking your oil on a regular basis and especially after an oil change. What if a seal or gasket started leaking? What if the dealer left the oil filter or drain plug loose? You would have no idea until total engine failure.

I have to say that I had a 2004 F150 that I had an oil change every 5,000 to 6,000 miles and I never checked it till one time at around 160,000 miles I realized I had gone over 6,000 miles. I checked it and it was a quart low. My work had me staying in cheap motels for 30 years and it amused me to see a lot of mostly older men checking their oil and washing their headlights before they checked out in the morning. Basically, I never checked anything in that truck. The Saturn I had, different story.

Don't worry about it.
Check your oil more often.

The dealer may have left you 1/2 a quart short. If you let someone else change your oil, do yourself a favor and check the oil lever afterwards. I've heard horror stories about dealerships, and other shops, forgetting to add oil back after it was drained.
It takes 30 seconds to check your oil, worth it in the absolute worst case scenario.

My 2016 2.7 burn about 50-60% of a quart @5K and about 80-90% of a quart @6K. Seems normal to me.
Not sure because it's an EB or Ford's design but compared to my Toyotas I had, the Toyotas almost burn no oil at all. Maybe burn up to 10% of a quart @ 5K. I use the same brand/type of oil as well.
