NEVER let my gas gauge get below 1/4 to 1/2. Still don't, and I'm puzzled by those who do.
Even when my truck tells me I've got 0 to empty, there's still enough gas left to get to 2 or 3 of the closest hospitals. And if I needed to go further, I've always got 20 gallons of gas stored in my shed.

I did this once in my brothers Tundra when I got lost on the back mine/trunk roads in Alberta. Once it hit "Fill Now" I drove 139 km/ 86 miles till I hit a main road and found a gas station. Judging by how many litres I put in and the size of the tank, I still could have gone another 30-40 km. My brother said, no wonder I fill up so much! The truck stated empty at 1/4 of a tank.

I filled up with 20 miles to empty.
23 gallon tank
Took 21 gallons
Getting 19 MPG
I can do the math pretty close if the tank is actually 23 gallon

I got a nice shock when I first filled up my 36 gal tank. I fill it when it gets just below half.

I have been driving a Focus since 2005. My commute is 37 miles each way. I also travel long distances on highways with service areas which charge a 20% premium on gas. I calculate my mileage at each fill up and I know the size of my gas tank, so I believe my range is 420 miles per gas tank. That's about 60 miles after the empty lamp lights. This is useful information.

I'll do the same math with my F150. With it's 36 gallon tank, this should not be much of an issue, but I like to have the data. With one tank under my belt, it looks like 0 miles happens with 3 gallons left.

When my gauge tells me I'm at 0 miles, there is still over 2 gallons of fuel in my tank, which is food for over 30 miles of travel, depending on drive style.

When my son fills his 2014 Focus from 0 miles, it takes a gallon less than the stated fuel capacity. That's about 32 miles. My 2005 Focus can go another 80 miles on empty.

While the fuel is there it is not a good idea. The fuelpump is cooled by gas in the tank. I suspect ford wants you to fill up with 2-3 gallons in the tank to keep from burning up the pump not to keep you from running out of gas.

Little from column a, little from column b.

All cars (to my knowledge) have a reserve, so once your "I'm empty" fuel light comes on, you still have capacity. It's really a dummy light. As in, hey dummy, put fuel in me.

There is a major difference between being educated and being intelligent.

I always figured there was a reserve amount in the tank when your gauge says 0 miles to E. I never pushed the truck but when I had my 06 IS250 i had to push it a few times. I went up to 35-40 miles when it said 0 miles to E.
