How do you understand this information?
I noticed in the owners manual that the 3.7 V6 and the 5.0 V8 can use E85. Why do you think only those two engines can use E85 as well as minimum 87 octane? Do you think it has more to do with CAFE regulations?

There's a difference in "recommended to use E85" and "can use E85." They might be recommended to use E85 because of environmental concerns. They might be able to use E85 because of how they're built - i.e. seals and lines that can handle that much ethanol.
A minimum octane rating usually is because of timing concerns. Going below the timing results in premature detonation (knock). Knock breaks things.

I'm not suggesting we debate the difference between the words can and recommended.

And your edited first post reflects that now.
So, to the newly-phrased question, not sure.

Along the lines of CAFE regulations... I wonder if the U.S. manual is different than the Australian manual in this case. The 2004-2008 truck is recommended 5W-20 oil here, but 5W-40 oil there. If their manual is different for the same truck, it might be the case here as well. That'd be something to check out.

It is because it takes more E85 to do the same amount of work that you can do on gasoline. Anytime you add boost to the equation, you need more fuel. I dont know for sure, but it is my understanding that the injectors in the 3.5 and 2.7 turbo engines cant deliver enough fuel under boost to run the E85 safely. I havent done a lot of research into it, but I know that is part of the issue.
Also its really to bad that they dont because boosted engines love E85. It makes cheap racing gas.

I think it may be more along the lines of government mandates that the auto maker has a x% of vehicles that comply with emission and economy #'s, by designing so many % they can fudge #'s else where, eg: Mustang 5.0 same basic engine but more power and more emissions output. I remember reading about that somewhere years ago so don't quote me on it, but it certainly makes sense from a pencil pushers view.
