Default How common is oil pan leak?

Hi All,

Been considering various trucks and like the sounds of the 2.7 Ecoboost. They seem to be very reliable (arguably the most reliable in the F150).

The main issue I have read about (correct me if there are others) is the plastic oil pan leaking. It sounds like it can be quite an expensive fix on a 4x4 model. I'm wondering how common this is?

Thanks in advance for the replies.

Well considering how many 2.7s are out there and how many are having oil pan/pan gasket leaks it's a very low percentage. There has only been a few on here report it. And consumer reviews online are as good as they get

To my knowledge the 2.7EB has always had a plastic pan. However it has been much less troublesome than the one on the 3.5EB. None of the 2.7EB owners I know personally have ever had an issue (With the exception of broken plugs from trying to torque an oring are not knowing how to to release the plug).

I've got a 2017 2.7 with 40k thats on its third oil pan. I think its got a metal one now as Ford upgraded them....
Doesn't worry me as its not dripping oil.

Oil pan leaks in general are FAR less-common than most people (even mechanics) think. But any leak on an engine runs down to the lip of the pan, and then back toward the rear main seal/bellhousing, which is why so many leaks get misdiagnosed as pan gasket or RMS. IME, most pan leaks are caused by someone removing the pan, and installing some gimmick low-quality POS replacement pan gasket, WRONG.

Don't know about the 2.7 but my 5.0 hasn't leaked a drop of oil at some 32K miles.

I recently test drove a 2015 with the 2.7 that I really liked and was ready to make an offer, however when I crawled under the truck I noticed a considerable amount of oil on the pan. After researching it, I've come across all of horror stories of the leaky oil pans, with so many people on their 3rd or 4th replacements. Of course when you Google such terms like "2.7 oil pan leak" you find all the negativity.

So I have a few of questions.
1. Realistically, how prevalent is the leaky oil pans in the 2015 2.7L?
2. Other than being messy, does the leaky seal really pose much of a risk? I ask this because I assume it's not much oil loss through such a leak.
3. The truck has high miles (150k) and is out of warranty, but priced well. With a possible oil pan leak, is it worth rolling the dice on purchasing the truck?
4. How much (ballpark price) is the oil pan replacement repair, when it's out of warranty?

Thanks

My 13 5.0 with 108K just had an oil pan leak, it was covered under ESP. I know this isnt a 15 but...............not sure its generic to a certain model.
