They only had problems with the 4.0 SOHC, the 4.0 OHV engine is bullet proof.

Right .. I wasn't aware of the problems when I bought this one .. It's a 2002 explorer sport with the 4.0 sohc (the one with all the problems ) .. It is clean as can be tho and runs great so well see how long it lasts. Maybe I'll get lucky and have the last one standing lol ... It's also a standerd shift, forgot how much fun those are to drive

Meant to say SOHC, I traded in a 2004 Exploder with the SOHC 4.0 on my 13 5.0 DOHC.

Mine had almost 100,000 miles on it and was still running great.

Hmm, this is interesting to me as I have an 02 explore 4.0 sohc as well as my 02 screw f150. Never heard about problems with this motor and mine has 155,000 miles with zero non maintenance issues. I've never gone on the explorer forum but other people I've talked to about these engines say they run forever.

German designed engine had issues with timing chain tensioners, I have changed quite a few heads because of failed tensioners, also replaced a few engines for the same reason. The only reason I bought one was because of the price, for what I paid I could have replaced the engine and still been ahead. Luckily that never happened.

Most of the 01's and 02's had a lot of problems with timing chain guides and tensioners as mentioned . Which require pulling the engine to fix or replace .. But yours has been good and the one I picked up has 157,000 miles. Sometimes it's better to be lucky then good
