Default Are GM's quieter than Fords or are all new trucks quiet?

My brother in law has a 2016 GM Sierra with 33 inch Toyo Grapplers and its extremely quiet when driving. My 2011 F150 had mud tires similar to the Toyo and was much louder. Have they improved sound dampening on all trucks since 2011 by that much or is GM just quieter?

Hard to say without using a sound level meter of which one is quieter. I have only ridden in a 2013 GMC Sierra and my 2013 F-150, can't really comment which one was quieter. The Ford's do use the Soundscreen windshield which supposedly blocks a lot of the road noise.

The mud tires do contribute to most of the road noise though, so much so that I would never run them myself due to the noise aspect.

You'll find the type of tyres you run may make a difference.

besides my F150, I have 2015 F350 and a 2016 silverado 2500 hd for work. My F150 is quieter then the other two by far. The other two are base work trucks i think it would depend on the trim level. The higher the trim level, the quieter the truck would be.

As far as driving they all appear to be much quieter. What I did find out though when riding in my buddies GMC with six banger was that the constant cylinder shutdown from 6 cylinder to 4 cylinder and back to 6 was both annoying and noisy. Kinda like a 6 speed on our Fords dropping into 3rd gear and then back up to 6th. I thought something was wrong with his truck till he explained what was happening. Even then very annoying. Gas mileage though significantly improved compared to my 2011 F150 with 5.0L motor. I assume the V8’s may have this cylinder shutdown as well.

While it’s true tires can be incredibly noisy, I do remember reading when I was doing research that the GM’s have the quietest interior do to extra sound damping. This was on the 2014 and newer trucks.

Maybe the v8 is quieter but the v6 would drive me nuts. Went in a road trip about 400 miles in total. We were in hilly country so the engine constantly shut down and restarted the extra cylinders. Each time you’d feel a slight jerk.
As many folks on this site who note small noises, they’d be up in arms over this type of noise. Love his trucks looks but I think it’s time for GM to do a full workup and get rid of their base engines.

Interesting. I never drove the V6, but I did test drive a couple 5.3 V8's. The active fuel management was seamless in that engine, I didn't notice at all when it shut off and on.

My buddy has a '14 FX4 and is always telling me how much quieter my truck is over his. Both have 35's, but I have all terrains and he has mud tires.
