WHAT ISSUE caused them to need replacement 30Kmi ago?
Yes, there was a known problem with the current steering column's shifter when it first came out (in the early 90s). It was found that the casting wasn't designed right, and the tube would crack. Also, the bridge clamps & bushings that hold the shifter to the column would wear, and the screws would loosen. Ford revised the shifter parts in the late 90s, so I wouldn't expect to see that particular problem in a naughty or later Ford product.

it's on a 2013. Both gear selector lever and shift assembly were replaced. I've just never heard of this being replaced which is why I thought I would ask him here

I replaced mine on an 04 because the prior owner let the cats clog, get too hot, and melted the cable. The cable touches the manifold. It has some sort of protection around it but that burned through.

The broken piece activated the park microswitch.
The shifter was about $600 and change and took about 20 minutes to change it out.
Had about 74K miles on it when it happened on a '13 KR.
