Gas mileage when towing a trailer

I have an '11 Lariat with the 6.2, max tow and 3.73LS rear. Much different than yours, but wanted to give a little info on it's towing. When I ordered my truck I was also looking to do some traveling. I took delivery of the truck in Jan. of '11. That summer I found a travel trailer I wanted. It was a new 2011 Keystone Bullet Premiere. As I recall the dry weight was around 5,900lbs., about 33' long and 11' high. I only towed it maybe 4-5 times. After having it I realized I couldn't manage it by myself due to my back issues. So I sold it the following spring. Gas mileage while towing it at 60mph was 11.5-12 mpg. After I sold it, I wanted a Polaris Ranger for use at my place in West Virginia during hunting season. After I bought it ('12 Ranger 800HD), I needed a trailer. I had a Homesteader Challenger custom built for it. It was a 7x14 V-nose with an additional 1' sidewall height to make the ramp door tall enough to get it in. It's empty weight is about 2,020lbs.. With the Ranger loaded, tow weight is about 3,500-3,600lbs.. I thought I was gonna be ahead of the game. Less weight, better gas mileage, right? Nope...Was getting about 11.5-12mpg at 60mph. On level ground, no headwind and little traffic, I can get 12.5, maybe 13mpg in the right conditions, but not for long. I'd say it's because the Buggy's trailer is so tall. While towing thru the mountains on the way out to WV, to maintain speed while descending (depending on the degree of decline), all I need to do is lockout 6th. or 5th. gear and she'll stay right at about 60mph..

Thank you for the information, Scarlet. Very helpful. We tow a 2018 Heartland North Trail travel trailer. 24 foot box and 6 feet of tongue; total 30 feet LOA, 11.6 feet height. Similar design as the Premier TT.
