Default Gas mileage when towing a trailer

I have a 2015 F-150 with the 3.5 liter Ecoboost twin turbo engine, 6-speed transmission, and 110,000 miles. We tow a loaded 24 foot long, 7000 pound travel trailer which is 11 feet in height. On trips with the trailer we are getting 11.8 mpg. When we use the truck on the highway without the trailer we get 18 to 19 mpg. Is it normal for the mpg to drop to 12 mpg or less when towing the trailer?

What mpg's are others getting when towing a trailer?

Thanks.
Frank

That is probably better than many get while towing. Single digits aren't uncommon especially in mountains.

Frank, Terrain and wind along with added weight will lower MPG. There is a towing section on this website that would be a better place for your question.

It depends, of course, on the trailer. A fifth-wheel catches a lot of wind as compared to a tow-behind which still catches more than a collapsible. The weight i a big factor but I think wind resistance drag is the biggest.

My old Ram dropped to the 8 mpg range when towing a 21ft fifth wheel.

I get anywhere from 9 to 11 towing a 7650 GVWR 21' camper in big hills and curves on a 55 mph highway.
