First F150

First F150
Hey yall! I'm looking at getting my first truck soon. I'm looking around for a SuperCrew 4x4 around 07-08. I don't plan on doing much towing, but might throw a 4 wheeler on the back every once in a while for hunting/riding trails. Would you guys suggest a 4.6 or a 5.4?
Also, a lot of the ones in the price range I'm looking at ($15k-20k) have had some high mileages. My dad (who is a pretty mechanically inclined dude) says he would be comfortable buying a F150 with 150K miles already on it. I was just curious as to ya'lls input on this. How do ya'll feel about buying high mileage trucks?
Also, just curious, how many miles do ya'll generally see on these model trucks?

4.6 will do you fine for your stated use. more reliable and solid than 5.4 in the 04-08 generation.
as long as you can tell the truck's been looked after, and the truck and drivetrain have a good reputation, I wouldn't sweat a high miler. actually, if given trustworthy history, I'd prefer to buy an older higher mileage truck, because there's been more time for stuff to go wrong etc, allowing better judgement of whether the truck's a lemon or has been abused/neglected.
150K ain't a bad number at all for these trucks

4.6 should be just fine, it's a great motor. I'd be comfortable buying something with 150k (that would be my max though), but I'd do a bumper-to-bumper tune up just in case. Don't trust the owner unless he/she has a detailed log book. I bought my 96 earlier this year and the guy told me "it's in great shape, I did maintenance on it last year". His version must be changing the oil because the plugs and fluids had never been changed. This will also allow you to get a detailed knowledge of the status of your truck, namely the condition of gears in rear diff and transmission. So there's no surprises when you're out on the trail (hopefully anyway).
They're tough trucks and can take a lot of abuse, so higher mileage wouldn't concern me too much. But I'm also kinda cheap, so take my advice with a grain of salt. lol

Great! I'm coming from the explorer world where everyone I've ever known with one had to have transmission work. One guy only had 51,000 miles on his before he needed a rebuild. That being said, I'm just concerned that the F150 would be the same ole song and dance...
I also looked at a 2010 yesterday. 4x4 xlt SCrew with 100,000. It was used as a commercial vehicle, but in 2012 the CarFax showed a visit to AAMCO. It was sold at an auction earlier this year and has been sitting on the lot for 100+ days now and the dealer isn't moving off of his $21,800 price on Autotrader.
Does anyone know of any issues with this model? It looks like there may have been a shudder in the tranny of some but I can't tell how common it is....
Thanks for the help guys!

if you're buying a truck after 08, it's just as well to go with an '11. greatly improved powertrain. might cost a bit more but if you're going to cut it that close, don't compromise.
