Fuel tank Problem?
 

I have a 1994 F150.
While driving under normal load using the front tank, it stutters and hesitates almost as if it were stalling. I then switch to the rear tank and it runs fine.
If I stomp on it stutters, with gas to the floor I switch tanks and it acts like I have hit the nitrous switch.

Are there 2 fuel filters on this or just one?

Any body have any clues? TIA

IIRC, there should be just one fuel filter.

Sounds like it could be a problem with either the fuel pump or pickup screen in the front tank, or with the tank selection device / valve.

Another thought - is the front tank vented properly and is the vent working?

I have replace the filter in the last year.
Switching from back tank to front is a rough transfer, but from front to back tank is a smooth transfer.

If the fuel pump is going bad, are they expensive and are they hard to replace?

All runs fine with just the rear tank supplies fuel.

my 90 f250 had this problem, one tank ran fine and one tank ran like sh*t changed fuel pump and all was well. can't remember the pump price, but changed it at work one night. drop the tank a little or lift up the bed.

I have an 88 f-150 5.0 with simular problem. Drive 10 miles ok then seems to stall on expressway at 65mph, ignition light comes on. Then while coasting I switch on the rear tank and it starts running perfectly. Where do I start in trouble shooting this? I just bought truck 3 months ago and runs great except for this quirk that happens about every two weeks. Seems to occur when tank level is lower.

the best way to see what the problem is would be to drop the tank and pull out the pump and see if the screen is plugged and if not it is most likely the pump ... it usually is on the old fords from what i have seen

The pump in front tank finally quit entirely. Replaced pump and due to rust replaced the front tank with new one. Now runs fine. Also when doing tuneup found one plug cracked and in poor condition. plug was fouled since it was not always firing. Tune up made hugh dufference in overall running. Installed motorcraft plugs with new wires and rotor with cap.
