My buddies ECOBOOST Focus RS goes through about 1/4 tank every 20 minutes on the track...
... of course he's not trying to tow the world, just keep up with the Audi's and Corvettes😀

I average somewhere between 21 and 22 mpg with my 5.0 combined city with mostly highway on a calm day. Sometimes even better.
Unless the engine is operating in open loop, towing, engine needs a tuneup or especially with lead feet on the throttle, the low mpg's posted here are hard to believe based solely on my experience..
I noticed strong head winds, last second stops at stop signs or lights, Winter gas, sport mode and speeds over around 60 mph all take a big mpg hits on my truck typically down to around 17mpg or a little less.

I have a 2015 XLT SCREW 3.5eco and 4x4 with tow package and 3.55 gears. The 6000 miles that I've put on the truck in the last year since I have owned it come out to a 19.5 mpg average on the lie-o-meter with roughly a 50/50 highway/city split. I calc closer to 18mpg when doing it by hand. I do live in Denver and drive at 5000+ feet of elevation most of the time. I try to stay out of the turbo as much as possible and generally only use it accelerating on highway on ramps or to quickly pass someone. I did put in one of 8 in instrument clusters from livinitup and having that turbo gauge is hugely helpful in monitoring my turbo use. From the sound of it, you either have a heavier foot than you think, or there is something wrong.

I see the same things, but cruising @70 MPH I averaged 24.2 MPG hand calculated. Surprised the heck out of me that it was that good. I noticed that we must be back to summer blend as my mileage has improved the last week. I am seeing over 22 MPG where normally it is between 20-21. My warm summer driving was about a month before winter blend came out, so this is my first summer tank since the truck was broken in.

24+ mpg at 70mph is about as good as it gets.
I hit 25 mpg a couple times but was trying really hard to do it by long coasting to stops and up hills on 45 mph country roads.
Yeah, i also noticed mpg has been noticeably better with the Summer blend gas.
When auto manufacturers determine their mileage ratings, i'll bet they use Summer gas. lol

On the highway I can get 21 with my 5.0 not even thinking about it and 22-23 trying to max it out. In the city it'll plummet to 15-16 quickly so the combined is usually somewhere around 19.

In the end, I think the fuel mileage difference between the 3.5 and 5.0 comes down more to the driver and truck configuration than anything else.
Overall I'd say it's probably easier to get max mileage out of the 5.0 though. All you have to do with that one is not rev it high. The 3.5 is trickier because it will come into boost at low throttle/high torque demand situations and hurt fuel economy.
Another thing worth mentioning with all EB motors is they eat spark plugs. If you see your fuel mileage dropping, it likely needs a new set of plugs.
