Front end noise, goes away in 4x4, even with front shaft removed.
Hey everyone,
just looking for some insight on an issue. 2013, 4x4. Driving the truck, it has a weird howl, you can feel it on your feet and a bit in the steering wheel. If you put the truck in 4x4 it goes away. Brought in, checked all fluid levels, theyre good. I removed transfer case drive shaft. Drove it again and in 2wd it does the same thing. Howls. Howl increases and decreases with speed. Put the truck in 4x4 - again no transfer case drive shaft, and the problem goes away. I was going down the road 60kmh, shifted it from 4x4 high back to 2wd and the noise comes back in. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I just read up about these. We have several trucks with high mileage and have never had this issue, so this is first time dealing with it. Left side axle shaft spinning with truck running, and right side is free wheeling, and good vacuum. Thanks for the help!

Shifting in/out of 4X4, and noise disappears going into 4H, usually indicates an IWE problem.
Doesn't matter the mileage, it can happen at anytime.
Sounds somewhat like you're describing a wheelbearing, but noise disappearing is a pretty good indications of an IWE.
As always, the checkvalve and/or solenoid are suspect, as well as a leak in hoses. Bad seal on IWE is another area to check.
