Ford F-150 Oil Pump (Good or Bad?)
I've been having an issue with my truck, it's a 1987 Ford F-150 4.9L inline 6 with 200,000 miles, the problem I'm having is that at start up, if the truck has been sitting for over 4 hours, there is a lot of clatter coming from the engine for about 2 seconds, then it smooths out and runs fine. I've been told many things that may be wrong with it, but I would rather have an opinion from people that have dealt with Fords. I'm leaning towards the oil pump being old and not pumping enough oil at start up. I've tried 5w-30 oil, 10w-30, even added a bottle of lucas oil treatment, which would make it near the 20w-50 range, did not change anything. My oil pressure gauge reads anywhere from 1/4 to half and it fluctuates throughout idle and driving (already replaced the oil pressure sensor). I haven't checked the oil pressure directly from the engine yet and what pressure range should I be looking for? Is my oil pump just so old, how can I be sure of this? Or is it something else I should be looking at? Any help is appreciated.

With that many miles it's highly likely the bearing clearances have grown causing a drop in pressure. Keep running it till it seizes or put a rebuilt engine it.
