I'm shocked that they aren't concerned about Ford being upset. The video also makes some of their technicians look bad--V8 for towing? The 3.5 is just as capable.

Personally, I think both engines are very reliable. I would agree though that the V8 is probably a bit more reliable and easier to work on--just my opinion.

I was thinking exactly the same thing. I'm on the 5.0 side of the fence, but I'm not oblivious to the fact that the 3.5 eco is an absolute beast. If you're going to vote 5.0, you can't say it's because of its towing capability when the 3.5 can tow just as much and then some.

It's still interesting to see the opinions of the guys that work on these things on a daily basis though.

What I got out of that is that the 5.0 is capable, more reliable, and less expensive to repair. One of the two eco votes was from a guy who was new to ford.

Thats what puts the Ecoboost ahead of the pack, not that it's a turbo V6, but has the torque of a diesel in a gas engine.
Except, it won't out-tow anything while it's on the rack at the dealership.

That's the entire point of the video in this thread. Is an incremental increase in torque really worth the expense and headache? Everybody knows that the "crappy excuses for a truck" from every company out there will tow right along side the EcoBoost trucks. TFL Truck has proven it with video time and time again.

Personally, I'm going with the truck that will still get the same job done AND stay on the road for 200,000+ miles with no repairs. And that's the consensus that the video in the first post was getting to. Nobody walked up to those technicians and said, "Which engine makes more torque?"

I have had 6 different EB, and over 300K miles between them all and not one of them wound up on the "rack". My current 16 has 16K on it so far and has been the smoothest running one yet. I have no fear of reliability issues with the Ecoboost. Of my fellow coworkers, 4 of them have F150's, only one has an EB, the others have the 5.0 and of the three, one of them has been in the shop twice for engine issues. I also have a coworker with a Fusion and an Escape with the EB engines and he loves them, has nearly 100K on each and never had an issue.

As far as towing, I know that the EB will walk away from any of those other engines. I did it myself pulling a 6300# trailer with 3.15 gearing on a stock tune up one of the highest roads, 11,000 foot altitude, passed every truck on that grade. Easily held 65 MPH going up the grade.

Hi, when ever people talk about reliability with the Eco-boost, they always refer to the turbos. [not the actual engine] If Ford put twin turbos on the 5.0, would all of these 5.0 people run away from them? I doubt it.

As for these so called mechanics, it's normal to not like certain vehicles. In my days it was the Mercury Capri, but we would have been broke without those to work on.

Unbolt the turbos, or leave them on, do any of you really think that a 3.5 L V-6 is harder to work on than a 5.0 L V-8???????? Very similar construction with two cylinders difference.

I love the sound of a good V-8 and my Lincoln Navigator's 32 valve dual over cam V-8 sounds great. I bought my Eco-boost for towing and there is no comparison at all especially in the mountains.

This is a sample of one dealership's mechanics and at this small Ford shop, I 'm willing to bet that only one or two of them are Engine mechanics. I have no faith in the opinion of the lube man or brake man Etc. of engine preference.

Finally, if I didn't buy my truck for towing, I would have bought a 5.0 V-8.

Of course not, the reason being even without the turbos the V8 engine makes plenty of power on its own, you lose the turbo's on the V6 and you might as well call a tow truck. Exaggeration................... (not).

This plus.......the other day some douch in a F150 5.0 with an aftermarket exhaust kept messing with me on the interstate in an attempt to race or just wanted to hear his pipes, as he kept flooring in.

Finally had enough of him once traffic cleared and he pulled next to me at 70mph and hit it again. I said **** it, spooled the birds and pulled away from him like I sat on a hot plate. Just hands down embarrassed his ***.

Normally I do not go around trying to race anyone with my Truck and this was a single event but non the less in that situation the 3.5TT dominated....
