Default F150 vs Ranger opportunity

Hey guys! This is my very post on the forum, with hopefully more to come. Basically I currently have an '07 F150 with a 4.2 v6 and a 5 speed with 70k miles. I may have the opportunity to trade my truck and a little bit of money for an '07 Ranger with the 3.0 and an automatic with only 15k miles. Both are regular cab, short bed, and 2wd. I have already done some research, I was just wanting to make sure I was correct with some of my observations. Basically I would be looking at a marginal increase in gas mileage most likely. Currently I get 20-22 in the F150 mostly highway. So I would not be getting much of an increase there. Power wise, it seems would be roughly equal, considering the Ranger is much lighter despite it having the 3.slow. From what I have gathered both the 4.2 and the 3.0 engines run a long time if maintained properly. So the only real benefit with the ranger would be it's smaller (could also be seen as a disadvantage), it's an automatic(could also be seen as a disadvantage), and about 50k miles difference. So more or less I am looking for you all's input and make sure what I am saying is correct. Thanks for taking the time and reading this and any info I receive will greatly be appreciated.

I wouldn't bother, the F150 is a much nicer truck to be in. I've been in new base model F150s (new being your gen) and rangers from '04ish. The F150s are nice, the Rangers feel like 20 year old F150 interior wise with fit and finish. I wouldn't do it, I don't see a single advantage except for miles.

But why would someone with such a low mileage truck want a higher mileage F150?

I would NOT do the trade!! I just done it but backwards from what ur doin, I went from a super cab ranger to a super crew 150 and I love it!! Nothin like havin more room. No I'm not getting the miliage I was but trust me the room I have makes it well worth it. Trust me as sum one who has had the ranger and the 150, keep what u have!! There's a reason the guy is willing to trade u and id bet my check one reason is it's too small, and no telling what other reasons. Keep what u have and stick around here, you'll learn alot. Welcome.

What you guys are saying is basically what I was thinking. I wanted someone else to tell me what I was thinking was correct. The guy I could get the truck from is a guy I know who sells cars on the side. He was actually the guy I bought my F150 off of and he said he would give me a good deal if I wanted to trade this truck back in, since I was thinking about downsizing to a smaller truck. But seeing how the mpg wouldn't be much different if any and now that I have gotten used to driving around in the bigger truck, I probably won't do it. But I nonetheless was looking around and seeing what other people thought. Thanks for the responses.

Even though Im a big Ranger fan I would not do that deal especially considering it has the 3.slow. Good motor, just very anemic. They are very reliable proven trucks but the 3.0 would be a no go for me, if it had the 4.0SOHC I would consider it.

Ask him to let you keep the Ranger overnite,to get some seat time, then make a decision. In the end it is your money paying for it,so get what you want.Good luck.

I sold my '02 Ranger 4.0 for an F150 and it has been a day and night difference, I like the f150 alot more the only thing I miss about the Ranger is the easy parking lol but thats minor. Don't do it you will regret it!

my father in law has an 05 ranger with 3.0 - he only gets about 16mpg in hwy driving - the truck is gutless and the interior is too cramped in my opinion. Plus You have what I want - a 1/2 ton truck with 5-speed - wish they still had 5-speed available on the 11's

I had a 98 ranger extended cab with the 4.0 it was A very reliable truck. I put 200,000 miles on that truck before I sold it. Now I have a 2002 f150 short wheelbase single can 4x4 with the 4.2 and they both have the 5 speed. Honestly power wise they feel about the same. The rangers are good trucks I just wouldn't downsize. Even though your f150 is only a 4.2 those truck will still haul a good bit with the 5 speed.
