Some rust is normal and to be expected but the rust in the OP pictures is more than typical. It’s indicative to me of a truck that saw plenty of salted roads and very few (if any) undercarriage car washes.
Hi everyone, I'm new to the group and considering buying an F150 here in Boise Idaho. I've looked at 4 trucks from 2015 up through 2021 so far and have been surprised at the amount of rust on the undercarriage of these trucks. The rear axle/differentials are 100% covered in rust, which I heard is maybe normal, but each truck I've looked at has what I think is pretty serious rust patches on the frames, calipers, exhaust hangers, shocks, strut mounts, etc. Each truck I've looked at has been from mid-west or back east according to carfax.
Normally I don't see rust out here in Boise, so naturally it is off putting. I'm not sure if this rust is because that what Ford's do and I shouldn't be concerned, or is this an east coast thing, or if these are these hurricane vehicles.

im from Midwest. I’m familiar with rust issues, but not on this new of truck. For structural/safety issues on the frame, one aspect that is often overlooked is rust coming from the inside out (of the frame).
uniess there is something about the newer rear axel and diff that is especially prone to rust, I’d question if this is due to general salted road use (which tends to be more informally spread).
Is this an east coast truck? If so, I wonder if it was backed into salt water (ex pulling out a trailer).
may still not be a deal breaker (depending on your alternatives), but I’d probably want to open up rear diff as part of inspection if get serious about. Worst case you avoid a problem. Best case, you find it’s fine and you know it’s been freshly serviced.
