Collector, One of the reasons some don't like the 102 is because of the 6" spring they are mounted on and at road speed they will lay down on you. I went this route. http://www.worldwidedx.com/cb-antenn...nny-riser.html I'll try to attach pics incase you can't see them without being a member. If you don't like that google "Gunny riser" for a solid 6" threaded aluminum shaft or go with a solid 108" whip available here http://www.mfjenterprises.com/Produc...uctid=MFJ-1966
What kind of SWR are you getting with the 102 mounted right there? Do you have any ground straps or cables to the frame?

This is the best mobile antenna period. depending on how it is assembled several thousands watts will not even warm it up. I will not bore you with the reasons why it is the best

I suppose I should also clue you into very good place to get your coax and grounding straps.

SWR is 1.2 on 1 and just moves the needle on the Vanco enough to say it moved but not enough for a reading on 40. The main antenna mount is bolted down using the two most forward box bolts that anchor to the frame, I have the box bonded to the frame at all four corners, The exhaust bonded to the frame in three places (I run duals) An extra ground from the alternator to the frame. The exhaust bonding made the biggest difference of them all, what I thought was alternator wine was actuall interference due to the exhaust, The extra ground at the alternator was very little help.

You can buy a superior radio with that kind of budget, just sayin. Is the spring you got chrome or stainless? The chrome ones tend to eventually rust and can play hell with your SWR.

Man I didn't know this stuff was so complicated. Some posts with numbers I didn't know existed. Good information. I have a cobra 29 LTD classic. Had the transmitter tuned and it puts out 10 wats. Then I have a seperate box that hasnt been legal for a long time. Found it at a garage sale. Flip that switch and it kicks me up to 500 watts. Run it through good coaxial and a couple of fire sticks. When the extra box is on the antenna's will hum and I can transmit a long way. I have $250 in the whole setup.

Collector, If you must have a nigh****ch THIS is the one you want! http://customcbradios.com/Cobra-29-N...o-P692459.aspx Regardless of what anyone tells you, you will only need enough coax to go from your radio to your antenna, anymore and it's just a pain to keep out of the way and prevent it from being damaged. I'm confident you will but, there are many radios to choose from so research, research, research......and most importantly ENJOY.

Do you have any pictures of the exhaust grounds? I've heard of people doing this before but I never saw actual pictures of it. I need to get my SWR down a little so I don't fry the radio when I get the amp hooked up.

Raining at the moment but I'll snap some when and if it ever dries up. I sourced a box full of body grounds from the local scrap yard ( Dodge Dakotas are good providers) Ran self tappers into the box and used radiator hose clamps to attach to the exhaust, Muffler clamps work well also but hose clamps were free. Here is a little thread with pics if it helps any. http://customcbradios.freeforums.org...traps-t78.html

How bad is you SWR? You may have other problems. I have seen where no matter what you do you will not be able to reach a good tune, move the antenna two inches one way or the other and it can be tuned flat. What antenna/mount are you fighting with? First thing to check for is a good ground.

Last I checked it was around 1.5 but that was without a 6" spring on it. I've got two L brackets drilled into the sides of my toolbox with a ground wire running from one of the brackets bolts down into the wheel well where it is grounded.

I recently bent my 102" whip so I need to get another ordered soon and put it on. I've got a few firestiks, 3' and 4' versions, I could run bet I was never able to get the SWR tuned with them very well. Between them not tunning well and constantly banging the roof in my parking deck I just took them off. A few months from now I'll be moving so I might run dual 5' versions since IMO it looks better and hopefully with the 5 footer it will tune out better.

I'm thinking about getting one of these mounts and putting it on the roof with a 102" but that thing would damn near touch the clouds if I ran it. Any idea of how this mount might perform running 500 watts to a 102" whip to it? This setup would just be for extended road trips when I was looking for the best performance possible.
