I have a new 2013 f150 xlt reg cab flex fuel 3.7 V6 Engine, i reset my AVG MPG first time at 7,000 miles and it was at 0.0 it kept going up to 16 and it stayed there without adjusting from like 12, 9 or whatever, i reset it again but this time it was adjusting from 16 down to 12 to 15 all over the damn place, so i need to know is it normal the avg mpg keeps adjusting while driving?

Gentlemen, I know hope springs eternal, if you want high mpg buy a mini- but, needing/wanting a truck requires accepting sub 20mpg- it used to be sub 10! My wife's Escape with the large eco boost 2 wd gets 20 avg all the time in hot flat florida- about 25 highway with my heavy foot at 75- 80- she had an Edge w the 3.5 - getting 21 hwy was possible at 70-75 - my f150 crew 4wd is 15 avg in city and maybe 20 hwy if I stay below 70-these are real world examples- a friend's HD 2500 diesel gives him 25 hwy. I have had Mercedes diesel cars in the family since I started driving - even the 5000 lb sedans gave 25-35 mpg - so getting 20 in a big square gas pick up is remarkable.
The way to find out real world MPG is ask! Most people are willing to help- and I find most Ford salesmen will not BS you. The EPA numbers are actually a close ESTIMATE- and have become more accurate- but meaningless if you drive a truck like a corvette! Want high mpg? Buy a small truck, like the rest of the world with $9 a gallon gas- or a mini. Thus endeth the lesson

There are no domestic BRANDS of small trucks, the GM Canyon is gone, the Dakota is gone and most lamentably the Ford Ranger is gone. I will say I get better overall mileage from my 2012 crew F-150 4X4 than I did with my '98 Supercab 2wd Ranger (4.0 leftover from '97, but the new 5 speed auto) I loved my Ranger, it was the right size for most of my pickup work. It was a high milelage, but strong running vehicle when the President offered me a deal that I did not want him to offer, but I took it. (I like something for nothing just like anybody else) So the Ranger went away. A new 2009 2wd Escape was left in it's wake. (I still have it, works fine, but is not a pickup) after righting my financial situation I looked for a new 4WD Ranger... They were gone a F-150 was really my only choice. (well I did look at GM and Ram, more of a dealer issue) I know there are Tacoma's and Frontier's but I am retired Army and as such was paid in US Dollars, regardless of where Toyotas and Nissans are assembled the check goes to Japan converted to Yen. I was never paid in Yen.


Right now there is no domestic Brand of small pickup, I don't think it would be economically viable to trade down if one was to pop up today. The new 2015 F-150 with a smaller 2.7 EB promises greater gas mileage, but it will still be as big as the current models.


I am not happy with Ford's decision to scrap the Ranger, I think it was still making them good money. The were looking at the F-150 being the best selling pickup for 37 years running and the best selling vehicle for 32 years running. They needed to rob the Ranger market to keep that streak going.

I've had five pickups over the years. First was a 1983 Mazda B2000 that I couldn't kill, put 200,000 miles on it and only replaced the radiator twice, starter once, brakes once and exhaust every year. It got 35 mpg on average for me. Next was a 1984 Chevy S10 with the 2.8 L v6 which got 30 mpg. Then a 1993 Mazda B2200 (First new truck), again the thing lasted for ever with very little maintenance other than regular oil changes and annual exhaust.

Next truck was a 1997 GMC Sierra extended cab 5.0L V8. Bought used, it cost a lot to run, mileage was 15L/100km pretty consistently. Intake gaskets usually lasted 80,000 kms.

Now I have a 2014 F150 XL Super cab, 5.0L 3.15 final drive.
So far my first 2 tanks have been pretty close to EPA estimates. with my average right now sitting at 12.1L/100km. I consider it very respectable for a 5.0L truck. I get better mileage with this than my Brother does with his 4.0L Ranger.

I think small trucks are going away because they lost the small engines. My Mazda's and S10 were great on gas because the engines were small. They couldn't haul a lot and that's probably why the engines grew over the years.

When I was buying my current truck, my wife's major concern was fuel mileage. Mine was utility, and specific requirements for towing etc.

Default lack of small pick ups in market

I may be mistaken but my Father-in-Law ( in the business for 30 years) had a Mazda dealership in the 90s- I recall him saying the Mazda pick ups were Ford Rangers- Apparently the Domestics dropped all the small trucks because of new safety requirements and sales segment is ruled by Toyota, etc. Remember the sport-trac/ explorer based truck-? great ride- great size- but mileage the same as an F150- Dead. As to not having the engines- the eco- boost engines in the new Escapes are fantastic- certainly enough power for class 1 or 2- and see my post below- I did a test yesterday- drove slow and steady on Florida Flat local Blvd- like road ( US1) at 40 mph for about 10/12 miles - avg mpg gauge indic. 28/30, that is with the largest engine option,2wd A/C on, etc. On route 95 ( an interstate) at 75/80 - for a 40 mile trip including about 5-10 miles on local roads avg 22.5 . There is no reason that a small pick up - even 4wd-could not get this or at least close. But, if an F150 eco boost will give 20/21 highway ( at 60?) I assume Ford may not see a market where many will buy a smaller truck just to get 5 +/- extra and have to challenge Toyota Tacoma- Hence- the Aluminum body? If there will be an Aluminum body F150 with a 3.0 ltr turbo DIESEL - It will be Plus 30 highway with High torque- and high tow capacity. Dodge 1500 diesels giving real world 28- 30 are selling out- Ford will build one!

Default AVG Mileage Gauge

AVG MPG gauge- Yes- it will adjust - Especially when you are at a light - you should see the avg drop by tenths as you sit idling - getting 0 mpg- during Highway driving you will not see big changes. But resetting while driving will give you new " instant" avg. info- so you can see what a steady highway trip is giving you, for example. An AVG drop of 2 or 3 MPG while sitting at a long traffic light is typical. The new start/stop being added to engines ( The DOT wanted it to be MANDITORY and unable to be turned off!) is intended to keep indicated/tested AVG MPG high so you are not wasting fuel idling and the CAFE mpg numbers can be reported as high by the manufacturer.
Frustrating that there is not an instant MPG gauge/option - when you see single numbers one tends to lift the foot a bit.

Default Unethical Ethanol alert

AMG - the performance/ tuner/MB partner/division that builds the AMG models for Mercedes has been having warranty/damage and very low MPG issues with USA market cars. These are close/tight tolerance hand-built, high compression racing specification engines. The engineers/AMG techs suspected fuel problems. AMG reps took samples of the supposed 10% ethanol fuel from random stations in Florida. They found ethanol levels of 14% to 18%. They alerted State/Feds and customers. They told customer to find non-ethanol gas if possible and are having service techs de-tune the high compression engines. The high ethanol levels WILL ruin any engine not designed as flex-fuel/85/15% ethanol or whatever it is- which is sold here in Fl. for about 0.30 less gallon- and apparently being sold as the 91 minimum/93 recommended by AMG/MB
Your MPG dropping drastically for no reason? Maybe contact your State consumer board?

Happy as a pig in S*>t here. With just turning 2000 miles, Avg has been 19mpg with about 60% highway, 30% city
My last ford, a 2002 f250 I got 8 on a good day...
I did just add a topper and seems to have dropped, i'm guessing from the weight, either way, others have stated, pushing a big square box down the road @ 18/19 mpg... works great for me!

Ford needs a 8 speed tranny in the F150's and with the 5.0 and the ecobeast I bet the numbers on the HWY and City will be great!
