Engine swap
So recently my 08 f150 blew a head gasket. It’s a 5.4 triton and I’m being told people sell these things when the occurs because to fix it it’s so expensive that it’s almost cheaper to buy something else. Well I still owe money on mine and I’m not looking to sell. What I have considered however is maybe an engine swap. Would the v6 eco boost fit in my truck?
Gone are the days when you could just swap engines. Could you get the Eco to fit? Probably. Would it work? That`s another story. With the electronics, fuel systems. computers, emission systems being totally different. "I" would look to either get your current engine either rebuilt or replaced with a reman unit, since you want to keep it. Good luck. YMMV
First quote I had was from some no name mechanic shop here in Phoenix that informed me they don’t do rebuilds but they would gladly replace the motor for the low low price of 14k. The guy that did rebuilds quoted me around 7k which I’ll probably go with but I was really hoping I could just junk this motor cause honestly it’s been kind of a mess since I got it.
I wouldn’t have an independent person or shop rebuild an engine for me (unless having significant first hand info on their (many) prior rebuilds of 5.4 3v). You can get a top level reman from reputable major rebuilders, with warranty for about $4k. With necessary additional parts and labor most people seem to report ~ 7k all in. Do research on the rebuilder/seller as there seems to be quite a range in what parts are used.
it’s just my opinion; but I’ve read too many horror stories from guys who have paid for “complete timing jobs” or “rebuilds” only to the. Battle more significant issues.
