The extra condensation from the intercoolers and turbo create that extra rust. He even said that new unpurchased trucks on the lot already have rust, so it's normal.
Just to be 100% clear on this: In no way is what the dealer told you correct. Condensation in the intercooler has nothing to do with the exterior of the truck's muffler rusting.

I would take anything that particular guy says with a whole bucket of salt, because he lied through his teeth with that one.

Stainless steel is the way to go, especially in the rust belt!

I buy a lot of vehicles and 95% of salesman have NO clue about cars and trucks. There about as uselful as going to oreilys and asking the kid behind the counter how to swap out that rusty muffler.

THIS!

I do a ton of research, months worth, before I ever set foot in a dealership. Invariably I know FAR more about the vehicle I'm going to purchase than they do. Frankly they should be embarrassed. Rarely do you meet people who know so little about their products as car salesmen.

The original poster is looking for advice on a rusty exhaust and we have another guy with a picture of his rusty exhaust so obviously something is going on. If you look at the picture you will notice that NO OTHER component is rusty...not one. In fact the rest of the truck looks perfect. How is this possible? If it was humidity or salt it would be the whole truck and not just one component.

I personally do not know the cause of it but it does seem to be limited to this component and it is likely occurring from the inside out since no other external component is affected. Also there appears to be some sort of fluid component since there appears to be signs of a rust coloured fluid flowing down the outside of the component. Whatever it is it is internal to the exhaust system, only affects this component and only affects a few trucks. My advice, avoid all 3.5's with rusty exhaust components as this is a sign that something is wrong. Or you could look at a 5.0.

My 2011 has 80,000 miles. 60,000 of those were the first 2 years. My truck is rarely driven. I have not had any issues with letting it sit for a couple weeks at a time. How long do you think all those brand new trucks sit around before they get bought and driven daily? They are started up many many times to be moved, loaded, and unloaded before they ever see the lot. Most of those are short start ups. There are a lot of other things to worry about than the turbo internals rusting. As far as the remarks about getting a 5.0 so you don't have to worry about turbo rust is goofy. The ecoboost has 7 years on the road now ( my 2010 3.5 eco SHO rolled off the line in 09) and I don't see any more issues than any other engine out there. It has over 100,000 and all I have done are oil changes and a few air filters.

Not once did you offer this guy any advice. You defended your own vehicle, slammed the OPTION of the 5.0 by calling it goofy and than openly stated that the 3.5 suffers from turbo rust. Let's face it, if you put half the effort into helping this guy out as you did in slamming my post than maybe we would have an answer that is better than the one that we have right now.

I know that I may be spit balling here but maybe we should spend more time contributing and less time tearing apart the people who are trying to help.

Nope, not what I said!! Your advice was great let me tell you. My point is the eco is fine if it sits or not. Where did I say turbos rust? You made that up!! I said there are a lot of other things to worry about than turbos rusting. Do you worry about the cylinder walls rusting when the truck has sat a few days? The turbo has an oil line to it to keep it lubed right? I have 2 3.5 ecos so I was giving first hand experience with the motor. I said worrying about turbo rust was goofy. I didn't call anyone names and offered advice from an eco owner. Do you have an ecoboost to offer first hand experience Or are you just an *** HAT??

OK so the OP wants to know if an EB will be OK if it is not driven a lot. Answer is yes, and no.

If you drive it for very short periods and don't let it fully heat up, then you get fuel in the oil, and if you don't change oil early and often, you will wind up with a bad engine.

Other than that, there is no reason NOT to get an EB. Just make sure that if it sits for any length of time to put a battery maintainer on it. As with nearly all cars now, when you shut it off, there are still components drawing power.

When you drive it, have fun with it, blow out the intercooler, get it nice and hot, and it will last you a good long time.
