I've driven both since i have family with both, own an ecoboost, like both. I plan to tow a good bit so i went with torque over HP. I would try to find a 5.0 rental truck and hook it up to whatever you plan to tow... might be tricky to find one with a hitch but you never know LOL.

The F150 I rented was 100% capable of towing, they all come with a hitch though. It's whether it has a brake controller or not. The one I rented had a tow package with the ITBC. In fact I need to find out if my truck will be ready today, it not I need to find a rental for the weekend because I have things I need to do, two of which require towing a trailer.

I had a 2013 3.5 Ecoboost and now own a 2017 5.0. Love both engines just decided I wanted the v8 sound again. 13 Ecoboost was great but fuel mileage really took a hit once I hooked onto my 31ft toy hauler. Plenty of power but turbos had to be spooling for all that torque. I averaged 6-8 mpg hauling with the Eco, I now get 9-12 mpg hauling same camper with 5.0. Both trucks 4x4 and equipped with 3.55 gears. One is an aluminum body so not apples to apples. Eco also had a leveling kit. hadn't got to that yet on my new one.

I just switched from a 2016 3.5 ecoboost to a 2018 sport 5.0 10 speed, I didn't have any issues with the engine in the 2016 but just wanted to get something more in line with my style, and missed the v8 grunt. I will say the ecoboost had more get up and go with less "effort" aka pedal movement around town, however once the 5.0 gets in its powerband its very fun with the 10 speed. Very happy to be back in a v8 equipped vehicle.
Yeah the biggest hills in south Louisiana are the overpasses!
