Default Double Gasket Incident

Did an oil change when I shouldn't have: tired, cold and fighting a flu. Missed the gasket stuck to the block and...well...blow out. Started the truck and it ran for no more than 5 seconds before the LOP light and sound of spraying oil clued me in and I shut it down. 6.5 quarts of fresh Mobil 1 and a can of MOA oil additive down the tubes. Had to redo everything.

The question - likely I did any engine damage via my stupidity or did I just make a huge mess?

All you hurt was your pride. Been there.

We have all been there. Only think hurt is pride and possibly concrete in garage with oil stain.

Been there done that and I do this kind of work for a living lol. Granted it happened when I was still wet behind the ears @ 19 y/o. The only thing you need to worry about is being able to clean up the mess.

OPer, I'll bet you never make that mistake again. Live and learn.

Amen. Even now almost 35 years later I still check for that gasket and have found it many times still stuck to the block.

That sucks but only one of you is hurt and it's not your truck. You're not the first and won't be the last, just most won't admit it.

You'll probably never do it again... I pulled that trick in my parents driveway 28 years ago at the ripe age of 17. Went into full blown panic mode. Not because I was worried about the car. Because I knew my Dad was going to beat my *** over that oil stain on his fresh concrete driveway. I hauled *** into the basement and hooked up hoses to the laundry hot water spigot and scrubbed whatever cleaners I could find till he got home from work. Luckily the fresh oil and quick response went unnoticed.

Missed a stuck gasket a very long time ago, it was cold and snowing outside and I did not take the vehicle out for a lap around the neighborhood like I normally did. It was the wife's, and she drove to work the next day, about 10 miles. At lunchtime, she was running an errand and left me a voice mail, said the vehicle was making funny noises, so she parked it and meet a friend for lunch.

I bought some oil, corrected the oil filter, refilled. She drove that vehicle for another 9 years, never had any engine issues. You should be fine.

Its 10 pm, do you know where your last oil filter gasket is? A long running joke around here.
