Dealer "Protection" Packages
What do the forum members think of all the extra truck protection packages that are offered? I just purchased a 2018 F150 Lariat. I am planning to purchase the:
- Clear chip guard for the front bumper, grill, and leading edge of the hood. I wish I'd had this on my last car. Should I have it added to the leading edge of the roof as well?
- I will also get a spray in bed liner. Not really sure if there are differences in this option. I was planning to have the Ford dealer install it at their body shop.
- I am on the fence about undercoating. The truck is already quite so sound damping is not necessary. I have had two Fords before, each for 20 years and the frame never rusted through. Do I need to worry about the aluminum body panels?
- I am also on the fence about the In-panel "rust-proofing". This material gets fogged into the doors and door columns. What I am worried about is will it damage the B&O sound system that is installed in the doors?

Bedliner...yes. For all the others, I've heard not much positive. Be sure to read the small print. We had 'interior protection' on an 07 Expedition. Kid + red Koolaid = hella stain. Small print gave dealer discretion for level to which stain was removed. Long story short...red stain until we sold it. They wouldn't replace carpet. YMMV

The clear film protection is a great way of keeping the rock chips under control. Up here a painted front bumper gets chipped up fast and look like crap after a year. I just had mine done and got the strip above the windshield and the pillars.
The dealer usually farms this out to a 3rd party. Either haggle a price with the dealer or shop around your local area for an install shop.

Most dealer addons are for people who don't know better.

The truth is they can sell you the truck and not make a dime or even lose money if you get all the dealer add ons. It’s very high profit for them. They might even be high quality stuff but you can usually get a better price elsewhere.

The bedliner is good to have, but it might be worth calling around to some bedliner shops to get a quote first. I wouldn't pay your dealership more than a LineX shop could do it for. Same with the clear guard, there should be some shops around you that can do that as well and they might be cheaper than what the dealership is going to charge you.
The other two I'd skip. You're probably far enough south that road salt isn't an issue so there's not really a benefit to the frame and body coatings. Even where I live and they put salt down at the slightest hint of snow I've never had my underbody coated and it's never been an issue.
