Default Considering 2018 F150 FX4..

Howdy!

I have been a Toyota guy for years but need a Tundra type truck and am underwhelmed with the Tundra. Cheap looking interior, lousy mileage and poor payload.

For the same price I've found an F150 FX4 STX model and am super excited! The ONLY thing that hold me back it longevity and reliability.

I'll be towing a 22 foot ~4000lb Airstream which will pose no problem other than more wear!

I like EVERYTHING about this truck! But will it give me 200-500,000 miles like my Toyotas have?

Here's basic specs:

2018 Ford F-150 XLT Truck SuperCrew Cab V-6 cyl ENGINE: 3.5L V6 ECOBOOST TRAILER TOW PACKAGE,VOICE-ACTIVATED TOUCHSCREEN NAVIGATION,FX4 OFF-ROAD PACKAGE,XLT POWER EQUIPMENT GROUP,Navigation System,ELECTRONIC LOCKING W/3.55 AXLE RATIO,EXTENDED RANGE 36 GALLON FUEL TANK,INTEGRATED TRAILER BRAKE CONTROLLER,SYNC CONNECT,Bluetooth Connection,CALIFORNIA EMISSIONS SYSTEM,MEDIUM EARTH GRAY; CLOTH 40/20/40 FRONT SEAT,OXFORD WHITE,TRANSMISSION: ELECTRONIC 10-SPEED AUTOMATIC

Thanks!

Randle,
I havent owned my 150 for long, but from what I've been reading, the reliability of these trucks doesnt touch Toyota's. So take that into account for your purchase.
I live in an area where rust is a generally bigger issue, so I went with the Ford (not to mention the high cost of the Yotas coupled with their bad MPG).

While ford has one of the most advanced trucks out there, that doesn't always translate into long term reliability. The reason why toyotas are so damn reliable is because they use ancient technology. Now am i saying the ford won't last 200k or more miles? Of course not. it could last that long. Same as the toyota could blow up at 5k miles

If you're going to use the truck to do truck things, get the Tundra. A few years ago I would not have said that.

dj made a good point. toyota doesn't use some of the modern day technology ford does. i'm not saying the f150 is more reliable than toyota's but has more advanced technology that can fail easier than that toyota's. i think fords are better designed than toyota's though

I'll pick reliability over technology and design every damn time. Hell , I'm not that fancy anyway.

Toyota does make a pretty damn good truck, hell you have to try to kill a tacoma or tundra. They just don't die. Before i started at the ford dealer, I worked for a toyota dealer for close to 4.5 years

Even if you could approach 500K miles on any vehicle it's unlikely these days my guess is everything around the engine is going to start falling apart before the engine does. You'd be lucky not to see rust on a steel body vehicle before 100K miles. I'd be looking at the diesel if I wanted that kind of engine life out of a Ford.

Dang!

I LOVE the styling of the F150 but am in a position where I have to keep vehicles for at least 5 years and am approaching 60 so income will be on down side. Be nice to get a 500K mile one too.

i gotta say the Tundra cockpit is very cheap looking and feeling! Big plastic door handles and 1995 everything else...

The Fords check all the boxes except as reliable which may be the deciding factor in my case.

It's funny. I'm at a large national RV rally and have been looking at all the tow or towed vehicles. Of the over 1000 rings and probably 3-400 trucks overwhelmingly F150! I'd say 75%. The other 25% equally between Dodge and Chevy. Oh yea Tundra? One. Not 1%, One Tundra! Talk about peer pressure!

Thanks for your honesty!

If you are driving 500K miles in 5 years that's amazing. If you are really only looking at keeping it for 5 years, the Ford is certainly going to last that long. When you said 500K miles I immediately thought that is going to be a 20 year vehicle....
