Default cleaning, paint touch up and car care

Was at Walmart today and been thinking of cleaning my truck up and touching up the paint a little. And maybe wax it. Well seems like there is a million products. I know basic car wash products, but what is a polishing compound, and a regular compound compared to a wax. What do they do? And what should I use?

I hadn't waxed a car in over 15 years, 20 maybe...until a coupla months ago. I had a lot of swirl marks in black paint and did a bit of research and settled on the PC XP7424 and Meguiar's Microfiber DA correction system:

Did a test-patch on my Excursion (also black) and then cut loose on my Jag....couldn't be happier with the result. So for maybe half or less the cost of a full detail, I got all the tools and supplies to do it myself...as for my time? Well....I WAS out in the shop, entertained by Pandora and not underfoot for Mrs. Ahol to manage.....finished the black and white Jags, Ford's are next up, Gray on Cream F150 and black Exc....I'll post before/after pics on the respective forums as I get to them.

Meanwhile, even used it to get a glossy shine on the guitar my son was building....and it does a decent job on headlight crud as well!

Post some pics when you get it spruced up!

I like nuFinish in the orange container, it doesn't mark plastic or vinyl trim pieces on my vehicles.

I know some of them waxes are made more for dark colors. I have a white truck. Do they make waxes for white or light colored vehicles.

Autogeek is a great site to learn the right way to detail your vehicle. LOTS of helpful information and tons of supplies.

I used the Meguiar's Microfiber DA correction system followed by their M21 Sealant on both a black car and a white care in the same weekend. Both came out looking nice. The black looks "deeper" and "pops" as they say, more than the white, but I think it is just the color and nothing really to do with the wax.

Well, they're not trucks...but here is one ea. black and white....

(The sequence for both cars was: Wash/clay-bar/D300 Correction compound/D301 Finishing wax/M21 Synthetic Sealant)
