Default Changing my drive shaft from aluminum to iron??

So, I recently found out my 2002 6cyl f150 has a sizeable ding in the drive shaft.

When the mechanic told me the cost of replacement I freaked and said no way and went on a mission to find a used drive shaft.

The mechanic said he'd help me and came up with what he called an "OEM drive shaft in great condition....may even be brand new". It was much cheaper, so of course I said, "sure, order it".

The part came in today and he called to ask me to bring my truck back in. Then proceeded to tell me it's an iron drive shaft.

I'm no mechanic, but doesn't this sound like a bad move for me to take???? Does anyone have any expertise in this?

I don't really know. I'm certain it was a crap-ton more though.

Sure... You will probably lose an extra 10% of your already needed hp by installing that. It probably came from an F250. Good luck.

(I am just talking out of my buttocks... IDK where an iron driveshaft would have come from, but I do know that adding something that heavy to a 4.2L will kill your performance.)

Default Debunking a Myth:

The "iron" driveshaft is really a thin-wall steel-tube driveshaft that is not much heavier than the aluminum model, so don't fret about it. There will be no performance loss whatsoever.

Actually, the steel drive shafts come filled with helium from the factory. It is supposed to offset the extra weight of the steel shaft.

I read that on the Internet, therefore it must be true.
