Calling all 5.4 3v owners - GAS MILEAGE?
I have been looking around and using the search function about this topic. However, I have not found a dedicated thread. So hear it goes...
Calling on the 5.4L 3v F-150 owners.
QUESTION:
What are you getting for gas mileage?
What mods did you do to increase your mileage?
I am asking because I have seen ppl claim to get 17,18,19+ MPG... I have an 05 Lariat w/ the above mentioned engine & 18000 miles on her (& hard tonneau). The best I can get is 14.5 (give or take a couple tenths), that is basically babing it and doing about 85-90 percent highway driving. I am not complaining here (as my smaller Dakota got the same mileage), just wondering if others mpg claims are accurate and if there are mods that WILL increase the mpg enough to justify there initial cost?

Inaugural TOTM
I have a 2006 SCREW with the 5.4 3V. When the truck was stock I would routinely see 16-17 mpg. That was driving about 80-90% highway miles and keeping the RPMs right around 2000 (about 72 mph). On straight highway driving I could get 20-21 mpg.
After my lift/larger tires and before I moved to Hawaii I would get 13-14 mpg in the mixed driving and about 16-17 mpg in straight highway driving. Now that I am in Hawaii and doing 99% stop-n-go driving my mileage has dropped down to around 11 mpg. Luckily though my driving distances have dropped as well and I can get almost 3 weeks out of a tank of gas so my fuel costs have dropped overall.
My mods that probably helped my gas mileage are a CAI and an Xcal II and custom tuning. These mods may get you an extra 2 maybe even 3 mpg, but they are going to run you a combined $700 so it'll take you years to recoup that money in fuel savings.

I have an 04 lariat and get between 13 and 15 on average. The most I ever got on a tank is 390 miles. I have a drop in K&N filter and I stay away from gas with ethanol in it.

workin for parts!!!
the best my 05 has done is 527 miles. this was done with stock 245/70-17 tires and throttle body spacer and hypertech pp3. the best with my 285/70-17 is 467 miles. now with all my mods i'm getting nervous around 370 miles. i will not that i have the 135 litre tank. the above 527 was done only once and alot of it was low altitude driving.
