My truck is an 11 with no rust on the drive shaft. Did some come with aluminum ones or is mine aftermarket.

no pics handy, but i have a 2014 5.0V8 and it's got the steel driveshaft ... when i picked it up, it was virtually rust free, along w/ the rear differential and driveshaft. Now, after about 4 months, the drive shaft is almost completely covered w/ a light rust coating, and the rear differential, axle, and a few other smaller things are developing a surface rust.

My 08 did the same thing. I never worried about it one bit. Heavy steel will get a surface rust from simple oxidation, but as soon as the rust develops, it stops any further oxidation and actually works as a protective barrier against further rust.

Thinner sheet metal that is exposed on both sides can (and will) rust on both sides, and end up rusting through due to the fact it's so thin. Those are the type of rust issues you have to be wary of ...

That said, the new aluminum drive shaft and the new exhaust components do look nice, as well as the paint coating on the rear differential and axle. But, that's not really a concern of mine ... I'm ok with what I got from Ford.

Why are some rear axles painted and some not?

I think it has to do with the length of the wheelbase, not the engine. My Ecoboost Scab has an aluminum driveshaft but I looked at a regular cab EcoboostTremor today and it had a rusty steel driveshaft.
