As a bit of a side note, the internet provides an awesome resource but what really stands out are trouble spots with vehicles (any vehicle). I've noticed that with every vehicle I own now or have owned over the past 10 years or so that if I had heeded every word I read about them online I'd be taking the bus. It seems that for every 100,000 vehicles sold (again, any vehicle-take your pick) all you will read about is the few dozen that had trouble not the 98% that worked like they should for years and years. You can choose any vehicle from any manufacturer and join up to a forum and you won't be long until you see what I mean. This applies not only to trucks or cars but also to ATVs, snowmobiles, etc., etc.

Well buck the way I see it. My truck is paid for so if it does go out. I will spend the 3500 and get a new tranny. I love my truck so money is no object to spending on her. I have spent 5000 alrdy. What is another 3500 chump change buddy. It's not like there is a magical clock on these fords that say 100,000 miles are due. So let the tranny go now. Asia all starts with a sign like slippage or shifting wrong. Or no maintenance done bad driving hard on it during mud runs. It also sounds like ur H8ing per ur jinx quote.

I decided to just make a list and see where I end up (only Ford & auto transmission concerned)...
Year Mileage Description
1955 - 150,000 no prob
1959 - 160,000 no prob
1963 - 100,000 no prob
1965 - 24,000 no prob
1967 - 45,000 no prob
1971 - 375,000 no prob
1971 - 95,000 no prob
1978 - 75,000 lost 4th gear, 90,000 lost 3rd gear and traded car
1983 - 125,000 no prob
1985 - 80,000 no prob
1988 - 190,000 no prob
1990 - 385,000 no prob
1997 - 180,000 no prob
2003 - 29,000 no prob
2011 - 17,000 no prob
2012 - 3,000 no prob so far, current vehicle

That's over 1,000,000 miles on Ford automatics with only one failure. Perhaps some others would have at relatively low mileage if I had kept them, but none were showing any signs of problems when I traded/sold them (except the one failure).

So some high mileage and some low, but the transmission failure I did have was rather low mileage in my mind. I do think Ford quality was very poor in the late 70's.

I didn't include my 1926 model-T because it only had a kinda, sorta automatic transmission. I did have to replace the bands once in a while, but you could do that by the side of the road. By 50,000 miles the whole vehicle was worn out. And then I didn't have any more automatics until 1955.

BTW I love my 2012 F-150 Platinum 4X4 SCREW.

Good for you.

I replaced the tranny in my truck and payed cash....you don't need to talk to me about "chump change".....buddy

There have been tons of people on here with 04-08 F150s talking about their transmissions going at or before 100,000 miles. I never said there was some magical clock...just stating the facts.

"sounds like ur h8ting"? What are we 16 and text messaging?

I'd be ticked if my tranny went out at 75kms (just over 40k miles!!)

that's not even close to the 100,000 miles average life we are seeing out of the 04-08 trucks!

Still having said that maintenance does play a role but consider this... having read most of the comments on this thread - most people are recommending changing fluid and flushing every 30k or so... my 11 manual says I don't need to flush and fill until 160k... how do we account for this?

I will of course change my fluid earlier because I want to keep my truck in tip top shape, but what about all the people that simply follow the manuals?
