Biases aside, should I be OK?

Well back then cars could pull trailers too. But today, due to litigation and everybody being sue happy, we have laws that say, uh uh uh, you can't do that! Heck my old 1979 LTD wagon could pull my travel trailer without a problem, I mean it was essentially the same thing as a pickup. Same engine and transmission, who knows, maybe even the same differential, and it was full frame too, only difference was no live front axle. It easily towed a horse trailer.

FORD lifer
I haven't forgotten - the big 'wagons ruled the Interstates probably more ruthlessly than the Minivan does now !

Wow! Thank all of you for all of the good and useful information. Thought I had thought all of this through pretty well, but based on the responses, I have more homework to do, and really need to reevaluate my choices. Never occurred to me that tongue weights would be listed as "dry" weights right next to the GVWR, and seems as though I knew a while back that 13% was used as a good average for tongue weight, but guess it slipped my mind.
So one follow up question (and this may be a dumb one), the Ford specs I've seen for payload indicate 2000lbs (give or take, can't recall the exact number off of the top of my head) for a 4x4 Supercrew 3.5 Eco SB 3.55 max tow. I don't recall the chart indicating a particular trim package. So a particular trim package (as mentioned here, the Platinum) is going to have less payload than say an XL due to the addition of options in the package? I guess that makes sense, but never really occurred to me. Also will a full gas tank, oil, tranny fluid take away from the payload, or is that already factored in?

Hi, you mention a payload of 2,000 lbs. in the Ford specs; My XLT specs for 1,900 lbs. but due to options my yellow sticker says 1745 lbs. The yellow sticker trumps the so called specs. Also while I was buying my truck, there was a fancy F-150 on the show room floor with all of the same BASIC items as my truck. This truck had a pitiful payload of 1065 lbs. Five people in this five passenger vehicle would most likely max it out.

ayload does not get reduced by fluids, only by passengers and gear. The payload ratings will be listed for each particular trim level (it gets reduced the higher you go due to those creature comforts those prissy fellas with the plattys can't live without between their visits to the dermatologist and their mani/pedi appointmenT.
So Chimmike, where do I find the payload ratings listed by "trim level"? I have yet to find that on Ford's website. I see it based on cab/engine/gear/bed config, but not by trim. Oh, and no offense taken on the prissy comments.
Robertsunrus, how do I get the info off of a yellow sticker when I haven't even ordered the truck yet? Keep in mind, I am trying to determine which truck to order, based on which TT we want to purchase.

Thanks Apples, unfortunately, due to the configuration/trim I want, there aren't any locally. Your suggestion is well taken though, and doing some additional "tire kicking" can get me a better idea.

Hi, I have information from a sales book that I got from my dealer.
(1.) 3.5 L Ecoboost.
(2.) 4X4.
(3.) GVWR 7650 lbs.
(4.) Super Crew 145" wheel base.
(5.) This equals 1900 lbs. of payload.
Now above and beyond a basic XLT, my truck has LT tires and the Off Road Package which comes with skid plates. These items, I believe cost me 155 lbs. of payload leaving me with 1745 lbs.
Note: To prove a point, I asked my sales person to find in any book or computer program an F-150 with 1065 lbs. payload like the one on the show room floor and he couldn't do it. And yet there was proof right in front of us that one existed.

Ok, got the part with the published charts, and spoke with my dealer yesterday. I don't think he understands the concept of "payload" very well. (Just my opinion). I guess my bottom line question is, where do you find out how much the options weigh, to be able to deduct that weight from the published payload? Particularly, for a "package"?
