If I remember right the 1/2, 3/4, and 1 ton sayings are relative to how much they pull? If that's true, the leaf springs would make sense, I don't see what else would be different...

it started out as payload capacity but if you look at what they can haul these days, it's not even close to an accurate descriptor anymore.

Back in the day, yes thats right. But on all newer ones, say newer than 97, thats not even close. They are totally different vehicles, different fames and all. 1/2, 3/4, and 1 ton are just vehicle classes now, they don't describe how much they can haul.

I believe it referred to how much weight you could place in the bed of the truck. 1/2 ton = 1,000lbs, 3/4 ton = 1,500lbs and 1 ton = 2,000lbs. I have had 2,950lbs of dirt and block in the bed of my truck at one time. The suspension was down to the stops, but she drove like a champ and had no problems stopping. I don't recommend doing that on a regular basis, but it is possible.

Normally when you go 3/4 ton and up you have larger brakes, larger wheel bearings and floating hubs for the rear axle bearings, wider and stiffer springs, Larger cooling sytems, Etc.

Right now the F150 with the fully box frame is killer were the F250 & F350 still have a partial C frame. This is were Chevy is kicking Ford on the Super Dutys. They went to a full box frame on their HD's.

Drive the Light 1/2 ton Chevy then drive the Ford F150 and you will see the difference. Most noticable with a trailer hooked up.

Then do the same with the HD and SD. Fords full box frame is better.

Back a few years ago Ford had a F250 Light duty. This is like the F150 with the Max Tow package now.

The SD still is stronger and better for every day Heavy Duty towing and hauling.

I agree today the so called half ton rating is out the window. There is a difference in a F150 and F250 with the 5.4 at least in the 97-03 models however. F250 with the 5.4 had larger brakes, more lugs on the wheels, 4r100 transmission, longer shocks, another leaf in the springs. I don't know if the frames are the same or not. So there is a little more than just adding a spring to a 97-03 F150 and calling it a 3/4 ton in those model years.

Well, I had 24 Versa-lok wall blocks in the bed at 82lbs each yesterday and It was like nothing was in the bed. In PA the half ton trucks are registered to Gross out at 5000 lbs. Which means it would be overloaded with more than the driver. Mine is registered as a 3/4 ton here.
