Best powertrain setup for RCSB?
#51
Well, I have a 17 rcsb 2.7 4wd 3.55 locker and I wish I had waited a year and picked up either a 18 2.7 for the updated fuel injection or went with a 5.0 10spd. I don't mind my truck, but if I had it to do over, those are the 2 options I would look for. Sadly they don't offer the 3.5eb in the rcsb this generation.

After much negotiation, I drove off in a 301A FX4 RCSB. 5.0, 3.73. It turned out to be bit more than I had expected; somewhere along the way, an OE spray-in liner as well as large (Gatorback?) mud flaps and unnamed undercoating had been added (not sure how I feel about that last one).
Thanks everyone for the input, and good to be back in a Ford.

Yeah...Undercoating I'm not crazy about either. It seem like after a few years it starts flake off and when you're under the truck working on it you get a face full of it.

I didn't get to drive the 2.7, unfortunately. The dealer trade was through before I even knew about the existence of the other twin 2.7 RCSB, and that dealer is just as far in the other direction of the ferry terminal. The 5.0 feels deceptively slow - it might be due to having been closer to the ground in the Canyon for 8 months, because a quick look at the speedometer sets that misconception straight every time. The 10R80 is still rough in its learning phase, but I can already tell that it's always itching for more throttle.

lol I know. It's pouring rain though, and maybe when it calms down on Saturday I'll break out the D610 for this truck's initiation. Speaking of initiations, it was pissing rain and howling today; on the way back from the Island, we ended up adrift on the (ironically newest in the fleet) ferry, struggling against the gales with just one engine - German engineering at its finest, eh? Dog tired though.

Does undercoating usually come off within two years if you don't maintain it? Mine looks to be the thick, nasty type on the outside - there's some on the top of the shocks as well, but thankfully none on the axles. What I'm really worried about is whether some of that **** managed to get into the frame holes, and what that means for my frame years down the road. I don't want to end up with a case of rotting-from-the-inside, Toyota-syndrome.

Hold on, I'm not ready for 10MPG I'll definitely give the trans and motor plenty of time to get used to my life before exploring the upper end of the power band.

Clogging the drain holes in the frame is another concern as you mentioned. I'm sure it will be fine and undercoating technology is not the same stuff as they used years ago.
