Average MPG guage/display

Average MPG guage/display
For those of you that have the Average MPG display in the middle of your instrument cluster ...
My question is this - when is the appropriate time to reset this? I'm assuming the whole idea behind it is to reset it right after you fill your gas tank?
Just wondering, how do you get the most accuracy out of this feature?
Thanks!

I actually reset mine when i'm on the interstate after I fill up. I let that average out, then it combines the city and stop and go traffic.
Has pretty well averaged at around 21.7, doesn't seem to move up or down but .1
You'll end up driving yourself crazy if you look at that display all the time and obsess about your mpg!!!! I ended up just putting mine on the trans temp screen.

that thing frustrates the hell out of me. I have the standard guage cluster, not the up level one that allows you to calculate based on the time driven.
in my normal daily driving I was getting mid-high 17's consistantly per the readout, and hand calc I was usually within a couple tenths of accurate. 2 tanks ago, my readout got a little better. instead of starting out around 20ish and falling down to mid 17's like normal, it only dropped into the 19's. I got excited, I tried my best to keep it there and succeeded. when I filled up at my normal miles-per-tank, I was at 19.2 instead of the typical 17.7ish.
I fill up, do the math and come up with 17.9!!!!! REALLY?!?!?!?!WTH?
I have since stopped watching it and keep mine set on trip meter now.
I periodically check the mpg and the last 2 tanks since the oddball are back where they normally are. mid 17's.
I find myself less stressed about "getting good mileage" when I am not constantly watching the mpg readout, and my mileage still seems to be about the same as it is when I do watch the dash.
