There's a light sensor on the back of the rear view mirror (facing forward thru the windshield) If you are in daylight you can cover that sensor to make the mirrors darken.

Example,...

Principles of Operation

Interior Auto-Dimming Rear View Mirror

The interior rear view mirror with the auto-dimming feature automatically reduces the glare caused by headlamps reflecting in the interior rear view mirror. The auto-dimming feature is disabled when the vehicle is in REVERSE. Power is supplied to the interior auto-dimming mirror when the ignition is in the RUN or ACC position.

The interior auto-dimming rear view mirror has 2 photoelectric sensors that detect forward and rearward light conditions, and based on those inputs, adjusts the reflectance level of the interior rear view mirror and LH exterior mirror to eliminate unwanted glare. The reflectance level of the mirror glass is variable and depends on the amount of rear glare in relation to ambient light conditions in front of the interior mirror.

When the forward sensor detects daytime conditions, the rearward sensor is inactive, and the mirror glass stays in a high reflectance mode. When the forward sensor detects nighttime conditions, the rearward sensor is active and detects glare from the headlights of vehicles approaching from the rear, or other glare producing light sources. To provide increased visibility when backing up, the interior rear view mirror glass will automatically return to a high reflectance mode whenever the gear selector is in REVERSE.

Thanks Robert, there's the answer: "or other glare producing light sources."
As in the daylight coming through the open overhead door.
Please, don't tell me that was in the owners manual.

Ford shop manual. There's a watered down explanation in the owners manual.

I can see the sensor in my review and noticed that once I put my truck cap on, it has tinted windows, auto dimming as effectively been turned off in my truck. I actually liked it when driving at night. My review it doesn't matter, because of the tint on the cap, but I liked my driver's side mirror dimmed in traffic. Not a big deal, just something I noticed.

Default Upgrade to auto dim mirror

Hello all,
i tried searching this forum but could not find an answer. Anyway, I have a 17 STX SCrew, it came with the base mirror and a manual inside dimming mirror. I have recently upgraded to the heated / turn signal side view mirrors. The drivers side has the auto dim option. Is there a way to add the auto dimming inside mirror that will actuate the auto dim function of the side view ? I am hoping that there is a hidden plug in module in the headliner. Any help please.

I too have wondered the same thing. According to the official ford brochure, my 2018 xl has auto dimming rear view mirror as an option. I replaced my exterior mirrors and the driver side is wired for auto dim. So I looked in the headliner and can see nothing in the immediate vicinity for a mirror hookup but there is a Y in the harness which is glued back. Im going to pull ithe headliner down more and inspect further. However if someone knows for sure....

Thanks for the info. Do you have any photos of when you looked behind the headliner ? Also please keep me posted if you are able to explore that Y connector. Hopefully it’s left there for XL models to add plug and play dimming mirror.
