Sorry but I am new at this, is there a way to delete a posting. I didn't realize this was on page 2 and posted my reply multiple times. I was thinking it wasn't being posted and I was doing something wrong because I didn't see the thread ahead of my message.

I drive my F150 in 4H at highway speed in winter when we have high winds- the road into the city gets blown over such that it goes from dry road to deep snow then back again. It's never done any harm and I'm willing to chance it more than I'm willing to chance dying.

My Explorer was another story- I effed it right up in a 4WD incident. It wasn't worth repairing.

Sorry don't know how to delete a post- wanted to delete one myself, couldn't find a way.

I can't imagine any damage that could be done, other than blowing something apart. (axles, driveline, transfer case).

If it didn't scatter across the highway, you should be fine.

How fast can can I go and safely switch into or out of 4High. For example on the highway in snow, I might need the traction on a steep hill. Can I switch right there and then ?

The owners manual doesn't list any speed restrictions for shifting in and out of 4 high.

From the owners manual:

Shifting between 2H (4X2) and 4H (4X4 high)
Move the 4WD control between 2H (4X2) and 4H (4X4 high) at any
forward speed. The message center will display 4X4 SHIFT IN
PROGRESS during the system shift. “4X4 HIGH” will display in the
message center if 4H is selected and “4X2” will momentarily display in
the message center if 2H is selected.
If SHIFT DELAYED PULL FORWARD is displayed in the message
center during the mode shift, transfer case gear tooth blockage is
present. To alleviate this condition, place the transmission in a forward
gear and move the vehicle forward approximately 5 feet (2 meters) to
allow the transfer case to complete the mode shift.
Note: Momentarily releasing the accelerator pedal while performing a
shift will improve engagement/disengagement times.
Note: Do not perform this operation if the rear wheels are slipping.
Note: Some noise may be heard as the system shifts or engages; this is
normal.
Note: 4X4 high mode is not intended for use on dry pavement.

Just make sure the rear wheels are moving at the same speed as the front when you turn the switch. If your spinning your wheels because you're stuck and switch while spinning it will make one nasty clunk.
