Post Alternator

I just posted a topic bout how my truck was acting funny after I washed it. (Which non of you helped me)

But so..... I took it in to my mechanic and they found out that my alternator was putting out too much voltage. Is that possible? Cause I swapped out my stock alt for a 225amp alt. The head lights were fine until after I left the truck at the shop. He said the alternator blew out my headlights too.

Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks.

Default How Much?

How much voltage is "too much voltage"? Nominal system voltage is 13.6, but many systems go as high as 15. Anything much higher than 15 will overcharge the battery causing a lot of electrolite loss.

Yes, the alternator can go wild if the pass transistor in the internal voltage regulator shorts out causing maximum current through the field winding.

Pull the alternator and take it to a shop and have it tested. Advance or Autozone usually can provide the service at a low or no cost.

Default Needs a Replacement:

The regulator internal to the alternator is screwed up. Have that 225A unit tested and, if it still puts out 18V, take it back to where ever you got it and get one that works or have the regulator replaced.
