Default Bad Cat Converter or something else?

Got an 04 XLT 5.4 Triton 165k

Began to notice some sort of hiccup between 45-50mph - only if gas was let off and came back into it. After some time, it began to hiccup going up hill as well at these speeds. Towing a load, it is more prone to do this. I originally thought it may have been the transmission jumping, because it would not do it with OD off, now it doesn't matter if it's off or on.... Took it to Advance Auto b/c check engine light stays on -and they said it was a Cat Code. Hard to describe the hiccup, but it reminds me of when I had a bad distributor cap on my S10, and the engine would jump. If I tow my boat uphill, the check engine lights start blinking, the hiccup is so bad, I won't tow my boat anywhere uphill bc of powerloss and engine hiccups. I recently had my fuel filter replaced, because it came off (previous owner had it duct taped on lol). I'm wondering if possibly something clossed the fuel line? But my gut tells me its a cat.

Theres a good shop around here in Charleston, SC that says it would be like $900 for one, and if its the other it would be close to $1500. I don't understand how it would matter if its the driver side or passenger side. would it be cheaper for me to get a flowmaster, if it is indeed a clogged cat. Are these things always platinum? Im wondering if I can get one online cheaper and have the should weld it on for me.

I also have a small manifold leak, I believe.. kind of have that diesel tick.

Thanks in advance fellas.

If the prices that you were quoted are correct, it would definitely be cheaper to pick up both the driver and passenger side Flowmaster 49-state direct-fit cats for your truck. Figure out exactly which code, or codes are being thrown and take it from there. If your cats have failed it is also important to address the issue that may have caused them to fail. If you have any additional questions, give our Tech Line a call at 707-544-4761. Good luck!

anyone? I checked some previous posts with the same complaint, but the poster did not say what the culprit was after it was fixed.

Sounds to me like you have a cylinder misfire, it will be more prevalent under load such as going up hill, pulling a trailer etc... probably just needs a tune up, new plugs and cop's. The only time the engine light flashes is for a misfire. With a misfire going on everything else is out the window as it can cause all sorts of other system malfunctions including cat codes.

Lightbulb

For your future posting consideration .....

HINT/TIP: You'll find posting in the
Late Model F150s > 2004 - 2008 Ford F150
section more helpful/appropriate than General F150 Discussion posts.

Yeah it does indeed feel like a misfire. I heard its a BIG deal to replace plugs and wires on the Triton... anyone one know the cost of this?

You sure it's got plug wires? I thought all the 5.4's by that time had cop's (coil on plug).
