5.5 or 6.5 box

I have the extended cab and thinking of upgrading to the crew. Three kids in the back while camping leaves no room for anything other than in the bed. So now I'm debating the 6.5 vs 5.5. While I don't use the full 6.5 all the time, I can fit my dirt bike in it right now while closing the gate which is kind of nice. Same with skis, etc. Also our camping trailer is a bit small so I appreciate having that extra bed space. Guess I'll test drive them both and see.

The "long" bed will give a smoother ride, tow significantly better, you can fit more things in length wise, you can close the tailgate with a motorcycle or bicycle in the back (albeit at a slight angle). Basically the only pitfall is parking but usually backing it in is the best way to go.
I wish they offered 8' beds...I'd consider a F-250 just for that reason but it doesn't make sense to have such a large motor to only carry around a few dirt bikes/etc.
If I was to get the 5.5' bed I'd rather just get the Expedition with a hitch mount.

I have a SCrew with the 5.5. I like the look of the Screw with the 5.5 than with the 6.5. I hardly ever use the bed so the extra foot of bed space isn't important to me.

Neither will fit an 8ft 2x4 in the bed. I just open the rear window and let anything longer than 6ft, hang out the window. Coming from an Explorer, it still takes two tries to park straight in a space. Maybe I need more practice.

You put long items through the window! That's a good way to kill a passenger if you rear-end somebody, or at the very least put a hole through your windshield! Just let that stuff hang out the back of the bed. With the tailgate down, 8' sheets of plywood and drywall come to just about the edge of the tailgate with my 5.5 bed. I hauled all the 2x4 studs to finish my basement that way as well as well. With the tailgate extender, I can easily haul stuff up to 12' lengths, and 14' in a pinch. Last month I carried all the 12' sections for a drop ceiling home, and yesterday had all my base and window/door trim in the bed, all 12' lengths.

I ordered my truck with the 6.5' bed for one reason.
I will be using my truck to tow my Jeep out to remote trails. Some of those days I may not feel like setting up camp for whatever reason. I'm going to have a topper on the bed. And with a 6.5' bed I'll be able to have enough room to put an air mattress and sleeping bag and actually fit.
When I go downtown, I'll probably take my Cherokee or Wrangler, both of which are great at fitting in small parking lots. When I need a big, open bed, I'll have the 8' bed on my Jeep truck. When I'm commuting back and forth to work I'll have plenty of room to fit in the work parking lot so it doesn't matter which vehicle I take.
