Default 5.4L V8 reliability

The 5.4L V8 used in many f150's from 2004-2010 has some issues (cam phasers, I believe). Is it an engine one should buy with 100K miles and expect it to go 250K with no major issues?

IMO, yes.

IF it has been serviced properly and not abused. In our fleet of E350's that engine has hit 400K regularly with recommended maintenance and 5K oil changes with dino oil.

From what i have observed, yes. My FIL has a 97' with about 250k miles and still original transmission and engine. This is his ranch truck so he beats on it.

The 97 5.4 is a different animal than the 04-10 5.4 as it doesn't have the cam phasers and ect. to cause problems.

Depends on the engine build date.. 5.4 3v built after 10/09/07 have the redesigned heads and upgraded VCT.

If the tensioner seals haven't blown out (dumping oil pressure & volume from the head) they're as good as any other engine out there.

Its not about cam phasers.......as Eric said, the tensioner seals blow out and the other MAJOR issue, the chain guides that are made of plastic (yes, PLASTIC) break apart and fall into your oil pan causing the pick-up screen to become clogged, starving your engine for oil. The motor itself is fine, the timing system sucks.

Had an 07 with the 5.4. I'd had no issues with it when I sold it to my brother with 121k. He'd had an 06 with over 200k with no issues. Our dad has an 06 with around 115k and no issues. All had the plugs changed around 100k with only one break between them I believe.

I had 168K on mine when I traded it off. No issues at all. But I knew they were coming.
