5.4 vs 5.0
#11
I've never driven a 5.0 but I will point out the 2v 5.4L (97-03) feel way more powerful to me. This is probably because the 2v's max power is made around 2,500rpm while the 3v makes its power above 3,000rpm. The earlier 5.4L also didn't have cam phaser issues or split spark plug problems. I've also seen a 2v 5.4L top 400k miles.

Having had and driven both, I have to say 5.0 for sure. It's power delivery is so smooth. Also when under a heavy load going uphill it does not fall on its face gasping like the 5.4 tended to do.

I have a 01 screw with the 5.4 2v and this was a good performer, until it got wrecked.Which is under repair.I also have The 5.0 ,13 CC. The 5.0 is a screamer compared to the Triton 5.4,How ever the Triton has 145,000miles on it. and under 10,000 on the 5.0.I will have to see if the 5.0 will hold up with out problems ,like the 5.4 has.

5.4 = slow as molasses on a January day, spark plug fiasco, drinks gas like it's sponsored by OPEC, and eats timing chains and cam phasers for snacks
5.0 = smooth as silk, almost no common issues after the early bugs were worked out, power goes on for days, capable of great fuel economy when driven properly
Even though the 5.0 is just the evolution of the 4.6/5.4 "mod motors", and even shares some dimensions with them, it really is night and day better. It's the engine Ford needed 20 years ago when GM started spanking them with the LS family.

The 5.4 is the best motor ever made. No other motor can surpass it. Just because I drive one doesn't make me biased...

The 3V's torque peaks sooner, is flatter, is higher, and extends farther than a 2V - because of the VCT system and better breathing.
The reason folks's butt-dynos feel the opposite is the factorie's extremely conservative ETC calibrations, enrichment delays and rev limiter. With just a simple tune - even a canned one - the 3V will feel vastly better.
Example curve - many more online.

No question - the 5.slo is a sweet l'il motor. Just not a torque monster, even in the truck. 6R80 stump-pulling 1st gear, (and a 3.73 rear end) helps immensely.
BTW - regarding VCT/VVT - almost every recent Ford engine has that system in various forms - it's a proven benefit to improving performance over a wide rpm range. FWIW - LMS and others do sell limiters fer most of 'em too, lol.

5.4 vs 5.0
Had a 2003 5.4 with tow pkg. and 3.73 rear axle, I now have a 2014 f150 with the tow pkg. and 3.55 rear axle......both great trucks and would opt. for the 5.0, all around just as good towing and alot better mpg.
