It does happen but I've not seen it as an issue with these motors.

They are very well protected, unlike turbos of yesteryear where they were slapped on a production engine, mounted on top, with no cooling, and the oil would drain down on them when not running. That led to coked bearings and shot turbos, and is what gave them a bad rap. Replaced dozens of them from Dodge to Subahoos.

The EB turbos are water cooled, mounted low on the block so oil doesn't drain down, and when the engine shuts down, coolant still flows through them. What makes them go bad is abuse, bad gas, or some other component failing, or putting a K&N duster on and chewing up the fins.

As for the engine, the basic design comes from the same 3.5 NA engine that has been in production since 2007, and improved on to make the 3.5 EB.

One must remember that the ecoboost VE is much higher than the 5.0, though.

according to the article you are correct but we all know that FI engines are way harder on pistons, rings then NA engines

That's the point, if it doesn't have a turbo to begin with that's one thing out of the mix you don't have to worry about failing.

Hope they are a different design but I already replaced a turbo on my '12 Explorer 2.0 at 75K.

Then you are a fool for buying your Ford. If your advice is to only go with a design that's many years old, you know, to be proven...this Ford 5.0 is a newer design.

You shoulda gone an got you a RAM with the old, old, old 5.7L Hemi. Then you can talk about proven design. I'm willing to bet a dozen donuts that Hemi is the oldest design still being sold in a 1/2-ton truck.

By your logic, we should all be buying used trucks with 150K miles on them. These new-fangled unproven truck designs are scary and should be avoided at all costs. Plus, the 10-speed transmission isn't proven either....so only buy trucks with the old 6-speed. The LED headlights haven't been out too long either....stay away from them. I guess we should all be using flip-phones and listening to 8-tracks?

(sorry for the engine troll bait, this whole conversation is so ludicrous that I had to have some fun with it)

Look what 5.Only posted on 1/18/18
"After swearing by V8s, I finally bought an EcoAnd wow, the power delivery is addicting. My 5.0 would hunt for gears constantly on certain drives but the eco stays in 6th and still gives you great torque. I just brought it home after a 10 hour drive and I can defintely see why some folks like this engine. Truck is a 2013 FX4 with 298,000 on the odo. That being said, I did get a check engine light and a couple of misfires at WOT only. Should I go ahead and change the plugs? Does anyone have any part numbers for the plugs & tools? What do I torque it to? Thanks!"
