5.0 or Ecoboost 2.7 - - - What would you recommend?
Hi all,
I am a prospective buyer of a new 2015 Ford F150 SuperCrew 4X4. I have pretty much decided on a Lariat with certain options.... but am struggling greatly with engine choices.
I know I don't want the 3.5 Ecoboost. Why? Because I will NEVER tow anything that needs that kind of torque.... plus, from what I understand, the fuel economy in 'real life' is not nearly as good as the EPA on the sticker.
I was originally geeked about going the 2.7 Ecoboost route. I test drove one and it was pretty impressive... felt very powerful... no noticeable turbo-lag... and I was into the 23 mpg highway/ overall better fuel economy.
But.... I have been lurking in some forums, and it seems like even the dealership sales guys say that if you tow anything.... or get into the 'turbo'...it will suck gas like crazy.
So..... wondering how 'gas efficient' the 2.7 will be in everyday driving? And also.... being a *new* engine.... is it worth the extra few mpg's to be a 1st year guinea pig.... and *HOPE* that it is a solid engine for the long haul....
OR... should I get the 5.0 V8 and know that it is dependable, tried-and-true.... and just live with less mpg?
Finally - what can I realistically expect out of the 5.0 V8 for mpg? The 2015 is rated at 21 hwy..... would that be accurate at a steady 70mph? Or is that only true if you're traveling a steady 45mph? lol
Stressing over this... I am coming off another vehicle that was supposed to be 'great'.... ended up giving me some trouble... and I am thinking of getting rid of it and trying the F150. But the configuration I have spec'd is damn near 51K..... making the wrong decision and having to live with an expensive lemon would about kill me.
Thanks Guys - hoping for some balanced info, and hoping this will stay on topic... I know how engine preference can go... lol.
Again - I would be using this as a suburban driver mostly.... with an occasional payload of some light lumber in the bed... or garden supplies... or moving the kids, or hauling something relatively light for a friend now and then. I have a 5' X 8' typical wood railed utility trailer I might haul on a rare occasion.... but probably not so much if I had a truck. I used it to haul behind a car or suv on a rare occasion.
Thanks for your reasoned insights!!!

Let me try this tact instead:
I am in research mode: Can people tell me the positives and negatives of their experiences with the 5.0 V8 and the 2.7 Ecoboost.
I apologize for my apparent ignorance.... for some reason I had thought that the 5.0 had been around for quite some time. Not the case, I gather.
I really am just looking for the best decision based upon my personal description of how I'd mostly use the truck...
