While driving in the hills I had my 2019 f150 in 4h and i left it in 4h as i went down a decline and i manually shifted it to 1st gear to hold the speed. Would this damage anything? I know i should have put it in 4L thinking about it now. When you are going down steep grade in 4L do you leave it in drive or should you put it in 1st gear as well?

Eiher way works. I used 4-Lo going down a mountain it was really cool. Putting into 1st gear + 4-Lo and I was crawling down the steep grade and less than 5mph no need for braking.

Ok cool. I wasn't sure if you should manually shift it while in 4 wheel drive I guess was my main concern. I just got this truck and have never had a ford before. And I wasn't sure if it would be hard on it in 4 high going down in first gear. No different than being in 2 wheel drive and putting it in first gear, right?
4h and 2wd are the same gearing. Just like you can drive 65 down the highway in 4h and 2wd.
Shifting is fine in all gear ranges.
Also, depending on how slippery the conditions are, 4l may not be best. For instance you are going downhill on a lot of sand and you are in 1st or 2nd gear of 4l.....the ground may be too loose to allow the wheels to roll and instead the vehicle can slide.
Not an issue probably for what you were doing, but something to consider if you're on super slippery areas, like snow.
If your vehicle has hill descent feature, you can use that too. If your vehicle is equipped, the 'how to use it' is outlined in your owners manual.
It depends on the hill, off road or on road. If you're on a road you should't be in 4X4 period. Either way I like to use a gear low enough to get to the bottom without touching the brakes. Or at least as little as possible. Off road that usually means 1st gear, but use what works best in each situation. If you can maintain a safe speed in hi range fine, if not use low range.
Not a lot of perspective here, but sections of this forest service road are quite steep, covered with snow,no guard rails and in places with drop offs of several hundred feet. Yea, I was in 4 lo to avoid having to touch the brakes and stat sliding. The gear I was in varied depending on how steep each section was.
