I don't know that the stereo sucks but yeah the speakers absolutely suck!
Upgrade the door speakers to a good aftermarket set and it will make a world of difference. Make sure the speakers you buy have have future expansion wattage capabilities just in case you decide to add se more wattage.

the factory stereo in my XLT was the absolute worst stock stereo i've ever heard. within 2 weeks, i added 4 new RF door speakers and that was cool for a month. I then installed an aftermarket head unit and that was better. a few weeks ago, i installed a Punch 400-1 and a single 10" PS2 sub in a custom enclosure and it sounds really good. The aftermarket unit had plenty of power to drive my doors and the single sub fills in the rest. its not the loudest on the block, but sounds great to me.
to the OP, i would tackle your system in the same fashion and stop when you're happy. you may be cool with just speakers...who knows? Good luck!

Thanks to all who replied.
Has anyone seen what is under the mat on the front dash? I wonder if that would be a good place to put a front speaker?

My 2005 f150 has a stock system with the factory 8" sub.. And I think it sounds great.. I had two subs and I gave them to my stepdad cause I felt no need for them.. The factory 8 does great and the door speakers sound great to me too
