I bought a 98 STX 2 summers ago. It has the factory stereo with the CD changer and all the stereo options but the speakers sucked. First thing I did was replace the factory door speakers with some Pioneers I had laying around from past vehicles and The sound change was excellent even for 10 year old Pioneers(back when they were still blue instead of grey. Ford standard speakers do suck. My rear ones just cracked so I gotta change them. So for starters I would say Upgrade the Factory speakers with a company of your choice. I just prefer Pioneer, always used them. My mom's 2010 focus stereo is very good as is the 2005 Ford 500 we have. My dad had a 2006 Mustang with the Mach1000 system and that is the best factory system I have ever heard.

The main thing bugging me was the lack of bass. I added subs and I'm happy.

Just add a PAC harness, amp and new speakers. You will be able to keep the stock HU and Sync.

The wife and boy are electronic junkies so when the drug me to best buy yesterday, the installation guy looked up to see if they had a harness and he said no. Do you know where I can get one?

Most vehicles come with a substandard system. My 350z came with the premium Bose system with a subwoofer. It was decent but not great. I recently added a sub, amp, Alpine Touchscreen Nav/DVD, to my FX4 and I'm happy with the sound quality with the new additions. Pictures of my system are on my profile. Never get the sound package on purchasing a new vehicle it will always let you down.
