4:10 gears thoughts

what is the forms consensus on 4:10 gears?

For the V8 5.0 (11-14)-They're a worthy upgrade for anyone with 3.55 or lower gears with 33-35" tires currently or planned. If you have 3.73, it's not worth it.

For heavy 35-37" you're likely better off with 4.56 gears.

Cons are that it costs roughly $1000 per axle. And it can be nerve wracking deciding on the new gear ratio as you only want to do this once! You also want to have it done by a reputable shop that does these regularly.

I have Yukon 4.11s and like them.

For the newer trucks with the 10 speed, there's less people that have done it so feedback is harder to find.

Ecoboost engines and their torque can usually still perform well without needing new gears unless you're in the 3.13 to 3.31 range.

If your towing a lot, I'd do it. Remember the 10sp trans has 3 overdrives....

4:10 gears for pulling 5k lbs is overkill, no matter what engine choice you have. Your fuel economy will suffer for really little benefit.

Also remember your truck's max towing capacity is 5k only without the use of a weight distribution hitch. It's capable of pulling much more with one.

my main concern is pulling through the mountains.

What year, engine & rear end ratio do you currently have? As others mentioned, it might not be needed depending on what you already have.

This. 4 / 6 speed, vs 10 speed trans makes a pretty big difference when it comes to gearing.

I have a 1997 ford f150 4.6 v8 4x4 and I believe 3:55 gears.

So given that, I would say you would benefit towing wise with 4:10 gears, since you have a 4 speed transmission. However, you would probably get worse MPG driving it unloaded. Is it a daily driver, or just used for towing/weekend duty? If it's a daily driver, you will want to consider the mpg loss.

Personally, I would get the bigger camper and then decide if you really feel like the truck is straining. 5k on that truck occasionally should be okay, and you might be better off saving your money.
