2017 10-speed
I've got the new 10 speed transmission in my new f150. It the first automatic I've had in 25 years. Anyone know a site that will give me info on how the tow/haul and sport modes actually change the shifting points? Anyone here know?
I'm also wondering the best method for holding back the tuck during the downhills on the big mountain passes here in Colorado. I've been manually downshifting but it seems the Ecoboost just keeps spinning up and doesn't hold back the truck. I must say I'm just off driving a manual f250 diesel that you could easily downshift and drop speed or control speed going down the pass. I. The tow/haul mode the 10-speed does seem to hold a little better, but I'm still riding the brakes to hold the speed limits. Any suggestions or websites where I can learn more about this transmission? Thanks |
The trans is electronically controlled. There is software in the Powertrain Control Module that contain the different shift strategies Drive / Manual / Tow/Haul / Sport.
The Tow/Haul mode and the Sport mode are simply different shift "maps" that tell the trans when and how to shift. You'll like Sport mode best when you're not towing. When towing, use Tow/Haul. You won't see much engine braking from 3.5 liters of displacement... and even less from 2.7 liters. Again, use Tow/Haul and especially while descending. And just enough brake pedal pressure to control your speed; no more. You may have to slow to near-big-rig descent speeds to keep your brake temps low. |

Simply lock out the higher gears with the - button... In your manual.

Once the tranny "learns" you and you "learn" the tranny I think you're going to find this is one slick piece of machinery.
As Apples mentioned you're not going to get a tremendous amount of engine braking but after understanding how it all works will make you really appreciate it. Learn, pay attention and experiment how to lock out gears. It's one of the best features of the tranny for towing. Manual and some youtube posts along with some of the threads you'll find when searching are very helpful. Most of the 10 speed info is in the 2015-present section of the forum. Congrats on your truck and enjoy the heck out of it. For a half ton it's quite capable. |
Cruise control also helps use engine braking.
I thought everyone just flew down those passes except for the pitas that use engine braking to slow people down. :-) |
