2016 Sync 3 Update / Carplay problems
Hey everyone, new to the forum here.
I recently purchased a 2016 with the 8" non-nav unit. I was told by a friend i could easily get Apple Carplay in it with a simple usb hardware change and update from Ford. I found the the part number for the updated USB module and picked one up from my local dealer. Before updating the software, I went ahead and installed the new USB module. I registered at owners.ford to get the new update, and it states my truck is currently up to date with no download options. I checked my truck and it is currently running Sync 3 v3.0 build 2024. I can plug my phone in and every function I had prior works just fine via usb with the music, and phone options. I've had auto-update on in the settings, and the truck connected to my home wifi for quite some time, and I still can't get the carplay activation to pop-up.
From what I understand, if you have the current software, and the new usb module installed, once you plug in your iphone via usb, apple carplay prompt should pop up. I never did the software update though, and I have no download options from ford. After reading through a bunch of threads here, the only thing I can come up with is maybe 1 of a few things.
1. the prior owner did a usb flash update out of order?
2. the prior update had a corrupted file?
3. the prior update was un-official?
I have just been stumped. I just recently found this thread about a way to make sure I am on an official sync build, and how to do a downgrade to a known official install package:
HOWTO Downgrade Sync3 v3.0 back to Ford Official v2.2 (build 17011) - Ford F150 Forum - Community of Ford Truck Fans
I was hesitant to try it after reading of some of the mishaps that can happen with these sync systems as everything else is working fine on my unit.
Having said that I really want Carplay, so I thought id give it a try. I can't even seem to find the official v2.2 referenced in the above-mentioned thread anywhere on the internet.
Has anybody had any experience with this update they could shed some light on for me, or point me in the right direction?
Thanks for any help.

I just checked to see what sync version I have and it appears to be the same as yours V 3.0.20204, Mine showed as up to date on the ford site. carplay works fine in my 2016, wonder if the usb module is bad, or the wrong one.
What is the part number listed on the hub itself (not the box it came in)? Chances are you bought the wrong hub, or someone purchased it before you and did a switcheroo and put their old hub in the box and returned the part.
Thanks barrytone. It did come sealed so I am assuming is oem from ford. I'm getting ready to pull the module back out and see what I have. After doing some more reading, I see the upgraded usb module has several different revisions? Part#-a Part#-b Part#-c etc. Now that you say it, the guy at the parts counter did say the number has been subbed 100 times, and this was the latest and greatest. Maybe a compatibility issue between revisions? I don't know, but it makes me want to try another one. Just have to read some more. Appreciate the input.
