Possible. E coat is extremely chemical resistant. I've let laquer thinner soak on it for an hour. No damage. Brake fluid, tranny fluid won't touch it either. Not in my experience anyway. And I've seen it get soaked in it. Mistakes in shops happen, where hoses explode etc. Damage and uv rays are really the only thing that will breach it. Just look at the picture he posted. Then look at the Ford warranty picture I posted. Which specifically says "separates from the e coat." Very very similar. That warranty pic I posted is from Ford corporate, and what they will compare to when the dealer sends pics in to Ford.

If there are other spots, or it fails the tape test is when I would consider an adhesion or possible contamination issue.

I have had rock salt do that to the paint on a 16 F150. The clear peeled away from the base coat, very much like yours. Ford denied it, rock damage. If you look close enough, to the one where the clear has peeled leaving base, it does look like something smacked it. The one next to it looks like a crack caused it, it has a sharp line of paint.

Default Paint flaking on 2016 F150 Tailgate Top

It started as a speck that I thought was dirt that that I simply rubbed and the paint began to peel. It continues to grow 2.5 inches so far after each car wash. I have a second spot that just started now. It was outside of the 36 month warranty and Ford Corporate denied a claim. I was told to document any repairs if there is anything Ford will do about it in the future. The local Ford dealership body shop said it looks like bad adhesion and the tape test is not enough. $700 estimate at Ford Body shop.

Looks just like mine. Last Summer, I noticed paint peeling on my 2017 in the gutter line just above the drivers window. A near impossible place to get rock or road damage. I had to fight like hell, but FORD even after admitting the paint on the aluminum bodies was a know problem, initially denied me. I kept fighting it, and eventually got satisfaction. I now have paint peeling just above the windshield in the channel, again a near impossible place for road damage. I also have paint peeling at the bottom of my drivers door on the inside in multiple places, how the hell do you get any damage there?

I see that there is a class action lawsuit against FORD for this problem. I am not going to fight them again... only to fight them again as it peels elsewhere. I will join the class action suit if I can.

It is a dependable, beautiful well maintained vehicle, it is a shame that their flagship has these paint issues.

Sounds like they didn't want to deal with you anymore. And just told you what you wanted to hear. If it were truly an issue with just the aluminium bodied trucks. The e coat would delam as well. So It wouldn't be happening to the steel bodied 09-14 and prior tricks the way it does. In fact it happened to those trucks way more than the aluminium ones. While it happens to other colors at times. The overwhelming majority is the color white. And that's across all manufacturers.

My 06 has that problem. I have to be careful with the high pressure wand.

My white 2016 is doing the exact same thing along the gutter line on the drivers side down to what appears to be a greenish-gray primer. No way in the world this should be happening.

My 2016 white f150 is doing the exact same thing, but along the gutter-line on the driver's side. I have owned multiple cars over 45 years and have never had one do this. In fact, we have an 8 year old Grand Cherokee and 12 year old FJ Cruiser and neither of them are doing this kind of paint issue. I will be discussing this with my dealer this coming week, but not overly optimistic they will do anything.

Like they said, touch up paint may help from the cancer spreading. If large, I'd mask it and use spray paint and a spray clearcoat.

You're way out of warranty.

You must be lucky to have owned multiple cars over 45 years and never had this happen. The 80s, 90s, and early 00s were the worst years for paint adhesion. That's the delam era. My very first car 88 cavalier had nearly all the paint peel off except the fender and door I redid, by the time I got rid of it in 2000. When I started out painting cars in the 90s we were doing 1-2 peelers a week.

In fact I do at least 2-3 roof peelers a month now on Hondas/Acura's/Hyundais. Countless when I was at Toyota
